Miami's Quality Points
| Grade | Points per credit hour |
|---|---|
| A+ / A / A- | 4.00 / 4.00 / 3.70 |
| B+ / B / B- | 3.30 / 3.00 / 2.70 |
| C+ / C / C- | 2.30 / 2.00 / 1.70 |
| D+ / D / D- | 1.30 / 1.00 / 0.70 |
| F | 0.00 |
An A+ is worth the same 4.00 as an A, so a Miami GPA can't go above 4.00. GPA hours leave out transfer and AP/CLEP credit, pass/fail, credit/no-credit, audit, proficiency credit and courses dropped with a W.
Miami truncates GPAs to two decimals: a 2.856 is recorded as 2.85, not 2.86. That matters at every cutoff below. Example: 3 hours of A- (11.1), 4 of B+ (13.2), 3 of A (12.0), 3 of C+ (6.9) and 2 of B (6.0) give 49.2 ÷ 15 = 3.28.
Credit/No-Credit Grades
Since fall 2022, a course taken credit/no-credit is recorded three ways:
- CR1: credit, with a C or better.
- CR2: credit, with a C- through D-.
- NCR: no credit, for an F.
None of these counts in your GPA. A CR2 tells programs that require a C that you passed below that level.
Course Repeat and GPA Adjustment
Normally every grade counts in your cumulative GPA, and credit for a repeated course is earned once. Miami's GPA adjustment policy lets you remove one grade, but only under narrow conditions:
- You earned a C- or lower on one of two attempts of the same course.
- Both attempts were taken at Miami for a standard letter grade, first taken in fall 2012 or later.
- Neither attempt carries an academic dishonesty notation, and you haven't finished your first bachelor's degree.
- You can use it only twice, on two different courses.
When applied, only the higher grade counts. If the repeat is the same or lower, the first grade stays and the repeat is excluded. The adjusted GPA carries into Latin, University and Departmental Honors, but past President's and Dean's Lists are not recalculated.
President's List and Dean's List by Division
The lists go to roughly the top 3 percent (President's) and next 17 percent (Dean's) in each division, among students attempting 12 or more letter-graded hours. The semester GPAs required are:
| Division | President's List | Dean's List |
|---|---|---|
| Arts and Science | 4.00 | 3.70 |
| Creative Arts | 4.00 | 3.70 |
| Education, Health and Society | 4.00 | 3.80 |
| Engineering and Computing | 4.00 | 3.60 |
| Farmer School of Business | 3.95 | 3.60 |
| Professional Studies and Applied Sciences | 4.00 | 3.60 |
Latin Honors by Division
Summa cum laude targets the top 2 percent of each division, magna the next 5 percent and cum laude the next 10 percent. Current cumulative GPA cutoffs:
| College | Summa | Magna | Cum laude |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arts and Science | 3.97 | 3.88 | 3.72 |
| Creative Arts | 3.96 | 3.90 | 3.77 |
| Education, Health and Society | 3.97 | 3.90 | 3.76 |
| Engineering and Computing | 3.95 | 3.81 | 3.58 |
| Liberal Arts and Applied Science | 3.94 | 3.82 | 3.64 |
| Farmer School of Business | 3.92 | 3.78 | 3.61 |
You need at least 62 Miami hours toward a bachelor's degree. Honors use your GPA from the term before your graduation term, and Miami takes the lower of your Miami GPA and a combined GPA that includes all college-level courses, transfer work included.
Warning, Probation and Suspension
Good standing requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00. Below that:
| Status | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Academic warning | Below 2.00 after your first semester, or with fewer than 16 Miami GPA hours |
| Academic probation | Below 2.00 with 16 or more Miami GPA hours |
| Academic suspension | On probation with 30 or more GPA hours and a semester GPA under 2.00 |
A suspension lasts two consecutive semesters or terms.
