Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA = (Sum of Grade Points) / Total Credit Hours. Each grade is multiplied by its credit hours, summed, then divided by total credits.

Is 3.5 GPA good?

Yes! A 3.5 GPA is excellent. It's in the top 10 percent of students and competitive for most selective colleges and graduate programs.

Can I improve my GPA?

Yes! Future grades immediately affect your GPA. The more you have completed, the slower the change, but improvement is always possible.

What GPA do I need for college?

It varies: Ivy League (3.9+), Top 50 (3.7+), Top 100 (3.5+), State universities (3.0+), Community colleges (2.0+).

Do transfer courses count toward my GPA?

Most schools do not include transfer credits in GPA calculations. Check your school's transfer credit policy.

Can I retake a class to improve my GPA?

Most schools allow grade replacement for retaken courses. The new grade replaces the old one in GPA. Check your school's policy.

What if I have a low GPA?

One low GPA does not define you. Focus on strong performance going forward. Employers and graduate schools also value experience and test scores.

How do credit hours affect GPA?

Credit hours weight each grade by course intensity. A 4-credit course has twice the impact of a 2-credit course.

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted treats all courses equally. Weighted adds extra points for harder courses (AP, Honors, IB). Most colleges focus on unweighted.

Does my high school GPA affect my college GPA?

No. College GPA starts fresh. Your high school GPA got you admitted. Your college GPA is calculated independently.
