Finding Your High School GPA
Your GPA is the credit-weighted average of every grade on your transcript. In practice that means a full-year class worth 1.0 credit counts twice as much as a half-year 0.5-credit class, even if you got the same letter grade in both — so the fastest way to find your GPA accurately is to enter it class by class, exactly as your report card lists it, rather than eyeballing an average.
If you only want this semester or this year's number, leave the "GPA from previous years" fields blank. To see your real four-year cumulative GPA, add your GPA and credits from prior years and this year's classes will be folded in automatically.
What Counts as a Good High School GPA?
| Unweighted GPA | Roughly means |
|---|---|
| 3.8 – 4.0 | Mostly A's — competitive at highly selective colleges |
| 3.5 – 3.79 | A-/B+ average — strong at most four-year colleges |
| 3.0 – 3.49 | B average — solid, meets most college minimums |
| 2.5 – 2.99 | B-/C+ average — check target schools' GPA requirements |
| Below 2.5 | Worth talking to a counselor about a recovery plan |
These bands describe the unweighted 4.0 scale. If your school reports a weighted GPA by default, use the AP/Honors toggle above to see your unweighted number for comparison — see the weighted GPA calculator for the difference in detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my high school GPA if I don't know it?
Pull your grades off your most recent report card or transcript, enter each class with its credit value (most year-long high school classes are 1.0 credit, semester classes 0.5) and the grade you earned, and the calculator does the averaging.
What is a good GPA in high school?
On the unweighted 4.0 scale, 3.0 (a B average) is generally considered solid, 3.5+ is strong, and 3.8+ is competitive for selective colleges. The US national average unweighted high school GPA is around 3.0.
Do freshman year grades count toward my GPA?
Yes, in almost every US high school your cumulative GPA covers all four years, freshman through senior. Some colleges recalculate using only 10th and 11th grade, but your school's own transcript GPA includes 9th grade.
How many credits is a full high school class?
A standard year-long class is typically worth 1.0 credit; a one-semester class is 0.5. Check your school's course catalog, since some electives, labs or block-schedule classes are weighted differently.
