UM's Quality Points
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.00 | C | 2.00 |
| A- | 3.70 | C- | 1.70 |
| B+ | 3.30 | D+ | 1.30 |
| B | 3.00 | D | 1.00 |
| B- | 2.70 | F / XF / IF | 0.00 |
| C+ | 2.30 |
An A+ is worth 4.00, the same as an A, and there is no D-. An XF is a failure for an academic integrity violation, and an IF is an Incomplete that wasn't finished in time; both count as 0. Your official GPA uses UM courses only.
Example: 3 credits of A- (11.1), 4 of B+ (13.2), 3 of A (12.0), 3 of C+ (6.9) and 3 of B (9.0) give 52.2 ÷ 16 = 3.26.
Watch out: an Incomplete must be finished within the time your professor sets, at most one calendar year, or it becomes an IF and counts as a failing grade.
Repeating a Course: Two Rules
Under the General Repeat Rule, repeating a course in which you got a D+ or lower means both grades count in your GPA. Repeating a course you passed with a C or higher earns no credit or quality points.
The Undergraduate Repeat Rule lets the second grade replace the first, with tight limits:
- At most two courses with a D, D+ or F, taken at UM.
- You must retake the same course at UM within two regular semesters of the first attempt.
- Only the second grade counts, whether higher, lower or the same.
- It can't be used for a course failed for academic dishonesty, and each course can use it once.
Graduate and professional schools may add the original grade back when they recalculate your GPA.
Credit Only Option
To explore outside your major, you can take UM courses for credit only, but only as free electives, not for major, minor or degree requirements. A CR requires a C average or better; below that is NC and no credit. Neither affects your GPA.
Dean's List and Honor Rolls
| Honor | Semester GPA |
|---|---|
| Dean's List | 3.50 or higher |
| Provost's Honor Roll | 3.75 or higher |
| President's Honor Roll | 4.00 |
Each requires 12 or more graded credit hours (credit-only courses don't count) and no pending I or NG grades that semester.
Latin Honors: Top 25 Percent by College
UM awards summa cum laude to the top 5% of each school's or college's graduating class, magna cum laude to the next 10% and cum laude to the next 10%. The GPA cutoffs are recalculated every summer from the previous year's graduates.
For honors, your GPA is never rounded and is the lower of your UM GPA or a combined GPA that includes all graded work elsewhere, even transfer work UM didn't accept. Weak community college grades can cost you honors even if your UM record is strong.
Probation and Dismissal
After the first semester, probation is based on your UM cumulative GPA and credit hours earned:
| Credit hours earned | Probation if UM cumulative GPA is below |
|---|---|
| Fewer than 33 | 1.7 |
| 33–64 | 1.8 |
| 65–96 | 1.9 |
| More than 96 | 2.0 |
First-semester freshmen are placed on probation for a semester GPA below 1.3. On probation you must meet your advisor and are limited to 13 credit hours. After two consecutive semesters on probation, or one semester with a cumulative GPA below 1.0, you may be dismissed by your school's Academic Standards Committee.
