Ohio State University (OSU) GPA Calculator

Ohio State fails students with an E, not an F, and has no D- or A+. Enter your courses below for your semester and cumulative GPA (Ohio State calls it the point-hour ratio), then see how grade forgiveness, pass/non-pass, the Dean's List and Latin honors work.

Grading system: Ohio State, A = 4.0 and A- = 3.7 down to D = 1.0 and E = 0.0. There is no A+ or D-; PA, NP, S, U, I, W, EM, K, P, PE and R are left out of the point-hour ratio.

Ohio State's Point Values

Mark Points per credit hour Mark Points per credit hour
A4.0C+2.3
A-3.7C2.0
B+3.3C-1.7
B3.0D+1.3
B-2.7D1.0
E0.0

The failing grade is E, worth 0 points, and its credit hours still count in your point-hour ratio (Ohio State's term for GPA). There is no A+ and no D-. Marks such as PA, NP, S, U, I, W and EM (credit by exam) don't enter the calculation.

Example: 3 hours of A- (11.1), 4 of B (12.0), 3 of B+ (9.9), 3 of C (6.0) and 2 of A (8.0) give 47.0 ÷ 15 = 3.13.

Repeating a Course and Grade Forgiveness

If you simply repeat a course, both grades count in your point-hour ratio, and credit is counted once. To drop the first grade, you must use grade forgiveness:

  • It can be used once per course on up to three courses. Forgiveness used during officially declared Exceptional Circumstances doesn't count toward the three.
  • Both attempts must be at Ohio State, and the petition must be filed before the last day to drop the second attempt without petitioning, usually the 10th Friday of a full semester.
  • It can't be used for W, PA, PE, S, U, UEN, NP or NEN marks, only letter grades.
  • After the second attempt, the first grade leaves your cumulative GPA but stays on your permanent record. Past academic standing isn't reviewed again.

Watch out: forgiveness is decided before you know the new grade. If you file it and do worse, the lower grade is the one that counts. To model it here, enter only the second grade.

Pass/Non-Pass: Up to 20 Elective Hours

Undergraduates with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 may take up to 20 credit hours PA/NP, only in courses not required for their degree. Neither PA nor NP affects your GPA. PA/NP hours don't count toward the 12 graded hours for the Dean's List or the 60 hours for Latin honors.

Dean's List

  • Full-time: a term GPA of at least 3.5 on 12 or more graded hours, with no E, EN or NP marks that term.
  • Part-time Dean's List: part-time in all three terms from summer through the following spring, with an overall GPA of at least 3.5 on 12 or more graded hours across those terms.

One NP rules out the full-time list for that semester even though it doesn't affect your GPA.

Latin Honors

Honor Cumulative point-hour ratio
Cum laude3.5
Magna cum laude3.7
Summa cum laude3.9

You need at least 60 credit hours of Ohio State coursework graded A through D, or S. PA/NP and PE credit and repeated coursework don't count toward the 60. Students who took a fresh start are judged only on work after it. Your college may add its own requirements.

Warning, Probation and Dismissal

A cumulative point-hour ratio of 2.00 is required to graduate. Below it, you are placed on academic probation; after a first semester under 2.00, your college may give you an academic warning instead. Probation continues as long as your college judges your progress satisfactory and ends once your cumulative GPA reaches 2.00.

Your college sets the conditions of probation, and you can only be dismissed while on probation. Colleges can also place a student on probation by special action if their progress in a program is unsatisfactory, even above 2.00.
