OHIO's Grade Point Values
| Grade | Points | OHIO description |
|---|---|---|
| A / A- | 4.0 / 3.67 | Excellent |
| B+ / B / B- | 3.33 / 3.00 / 2.67 | Good |
| C+ / C / C- | 2.33 / 2.00 / 1.67 | Acceptable |
| D+ / D / D- | 1.33 / 1.00 / 0.67 | Passing |
| F / FN / FS | 0.00 | Failing |
There is no A+, and a D- (0.67) still passes. Since fall 2017 an instructor gives an F only when you finished the course; otherwise you get an FN (never attended) or FS (stopped attending). All three are worth 0.00 and count in your GPA, so not attending a class you didn't drop does real damage.
Example: 3 hours of A- (11.01), 3 of B+ (9.99), 4 of B (12.00), 3 of C+ (6.99) and 2 of A (8.00) give 47.99 ÷ 15 = 3.199, about 3.20.
Retaking a Course: The Last Grade Counts
Retaking a fixed-content course removes the earlier grade and hours from your GPA, although every grade stays on your transcript. The rules:
- You get at most two retakes after the first attempt, and withdrawals don't count as attempts.
- The last grade counts, even if it is lower.
- A retake at another university does not adjust your OHIO GPA.
- Retaking after graduation doesn't change your graduation GPA or honors.
Watch out: some graduate and professional schools recalculate your GPA with every attempt, so an early F still shows up there. To model an OHIO retake here, enter only the last grade.
Retaking is different from repeatable courses such as MUS 3400 or PSY 4900, which are designed to be taken several times for credit and all count.
Pass/Fail: One Class a Term, 12 Hours Total
To use pass/fail, you need a 2.5 GPA in your latest full-time term or a 2.0 cumulative GPA; first-term freshmen qualify automatically. You can take one class per term and 12 semester hours in total this way. A P means C-level work or better and earns hours without affecting your GPA.
Pass/fail courses count only toward total hours, never toward distribution, major, minor or certificate requirements.
President's, Dean's and Provost's Lists
| List | Semester GPA | Letter-graded hours |
|---|---|---|
| President's List | 4.0 | 12 or more |
| Dean's List | 3.5–3.999 | 12 or more |
| Provost's List | 3.5 or higher | 6–11.99 |
The Provost's List recognizes part-time and lighter loads. A student with 12 hours but no letter grades can stay on the President's or Dean's List if they made it the previous semester and meet the GPA on any letter-graded courses.
Graduation With Honor
| Honor | GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude (with honor) | 3.5–3.749 |
| Magna cum laude (with high honor) | 3.75–3.899 |
| Summa cum laude (with highest honor) | 3.9–4.0 |
You need at least 30 letter-graded hours in residence at Ohio University. The commencement program uses your GPA about five weeks before the semester ends; your final grades then set the honor on your diploma and transcript. Magna starts at 3.75, higher than the 3.7 many schools use.
Probation and Dismissal
A cumulative GPA below 2.0 at the end of any semester puts you on academic probation, and it ends automatically once you're back to 2.0. If you're still below 2.0 and have fewer than 90 hours, you stay on probation with either a 2.0 semester GPA or a cumulative GPA at least equal to:
| Hours earned | Minimum cumulative GPA to continue on probation |
|---|---|
| 0–29.99 | 1.6 |
| 30–59.99 | 1.8 |
| 60–89.99 | 1.9 |
Miss both and you are dismissed. With 90 or more hours, a student on probation must reach a 2.0 cumulative GPA to avoid dismissal. Reinstatement is normally not granted until at least 12 months after dismissal.
