Loyola's Credit Points
| Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A / A- | 4.0 / 3.67 |
| B+ / B / B- | 3.33 / 3.00 / 2.67 |
| C+ / C / C- | 2.33 / 2.00 / 1.67 |
| D+ / D | 1.33 / 1.00 |
| F / WE | 0 |
The scale has no A+ and no D-. A W counts neither as attempted hours for standing nor in the GPA. Since Fall 2022, an emergency term withdrawal (WE) is also excluded, although both still count for financial aid progress. Grades from colleges not formally affiliated with Loyola never enter your Loyola GPA.
Example semester: 3 hours of C+ (6.99), 3 of B- (8.01), 3 of B+ (9.99), 3 of B (9.00) and a 3-hour Pass/No Pass course. That is 33.99 quality points over 12 graded hours, a 2.83. The P course earns credit but is left out of the calculation.
Pass/No Pass Requires a C-
For an elective taken Pass/No Pass, you need a C- or better to earn a P. A D+ or lower becomes NP, which earns no credit. Neither P nor NP affects your GPA, but an NP means you lose the credit you would have kept with a D under letter grading.
Repeating a Course: Highest Grade Counts
Under the policy in effect from Fall 2026:
- You can usually repeat only courses in which you earned below a C-, once, without special permission. The repeat must be at Loyola.
- All attempts stay on your record, but only the highest grade (one grade) counts in your cumulative GPA.
- A third attempt needs permission from your dean, adviser or program director.
- Unauthorized repeats, including repeating a course in which you already earned C- or higher, earn neither credit nor quality points.
Dean's List and Graduation Honors
The College of Arts and Sciences Dean's List recognizes full-time students (12 or more credit hours) with a semester GPA of at least 3.5. Other schools publish their own lists.
| Honor | Cumulative Loyola GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.50 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.70 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.90 |
Loyola does not round: a 3.49 is not a 3.50. Transfer students need at least 60 graded Loyola hours, not counting pass/no pass, and honors cover your whole Loyola career.
Probation: The 2.3 Rule
A cumulative GPA below 2.0 puts you on academic probation. You then need at least a 2.3 term GPA every term to remain on probation rather than face dismissal, until your cumulative GPA is back to 2.0. While on probation you are limited to 15 credit hours in fall and spring. A dean can also place a student with a 2.0 or higher on probation for not progressing toward a degree.
Dismissed students can appeal within 10 business days of notification, and dismissals are overturned only with documentation of university error or extraordinary circumstances.
Incompletes Turn Into F's Fast
An I that is not replaced by a final grade within six weeks of the following semester automatically becomes an F and counts in your average.
