University of Illinois Chicago GPA Calculator
UIC grades with whole letters only (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), unlike Urbana-Champaign, which uses plus and minus grades. Enter your courses below for your term and cumulative GPA, then see how UIC treats repeats, credit/no credit, the Dean's List and University Honors.

UIC's Grade Points
| Grade | Meaning | Grade points per hour |
|---|---|---|
| A | Excellent | 4 |
| B | Good | 3 |
| C | Average | 2 |
| D | Poor but passing | 1 |
| F | Failure | 0 |
UIC and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign use different scales: UIUC gives an A- 3.67, while UIC has no plus or minus grades at all. Courses numbered 001–099 carry no graduation credit and stay out of your GPA.
UIC's own catalog example: 4 hours of A (16), 3 of B (9), 5 of C (10), 3 of D (3) and 2 of F (0) give 38 ÷ 17 = 2.23.
Repeating a Course: Both Grades Count
At UIC the original grade and every repeat grade are all calculated into your GPA, and the credit counts once. Retaking a course adds a new grade rather than replacing the old one.
- A or B grades can't be repeated, and a C normally can't.
- A D or F can be repeated once without permission; further repeats need your dean's written approval.
- You can't repeat a course after earning credit in a course that requires it as a prerequisite.
Watch out: the only way to drop an old D or F is the GPA Recalculation Policy, and you can't request it yourself. If you can't graduate because of a GPA deficit, your college may exclude up to four UIC courses with D or F grades, one at a time, only until you reach the required GPA. Excluded hours no longer count toward graduation. To model a repeat here, enter both attempts as separate rows.
Credit/No Credit: 21 Hours, One Course a Term
If you're in good standing, you can take one course per term credit/no credit, up to 21 semester hours at UIC. You must choose by the tenth day of the term, and the choice can't be revoked after that. An A, B, C or D becomes CR; an F becomes NC. Neither counts in your GPA.
It can't be used for courses required for your major (including prerequisites and collateral courses) or ENGL 160 and 161. If you later need a CR course for a new major, UIC can convert the minimum number of CR grades back to letters in your final term.
An Incomplete must be finished within one calendar year, or it becomes an F.
Dean's List
You make the Dean's List with a term GPA of 3.50 or higher on at least 12 graded hours (6 in the summer term). Credit/no credit hours aren't graded, so they don't count toward the minimum.
University Honors and College Honors
| University Honors | UIC GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.50–3.74 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.75–3.89 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.90 and above |
You must meet UIC's residency hours. The commencement ceremony uses your UIC GPA from the term before graduation; your transcript and diploma are then adjusted to your final grades. Colleges also award General College Honors to no more than 15 percent of their graduates, and departments award distinction, high distinction and highest distinction.
Term Notice, Academic Notice and Dismissal
| Status | Trigger |
|---|---|
| Term notice (warning) | Term GPA below 2.00 while cumulative GPA is 2.00 or higher |
| Academic notice | Cumulative or UIC GPA below 2.00 |
| Dismissal possible | On academic notice, missing the required term GPA while the UIC or combined GPA is below 2.00 |
To leave academic notice, you need a 2.00 term GPA and a 2.00 cumulative UIC GPA, plus a 2.00 combined with transfer work if you have any. Your dean sets the conditions, which can include required courses and an hours limit. Students can also be dismissed for lack of progress, such as many Incompletes or failing to keep a C average in the major.
