GSU's Quality Points
| Grade | Quality points |
|---|---|
| A+ / A / A- | 4.30 / 4.00 / 3.70 |
| B+ / B / B- | 3.30 / 3.00 / 2.70 |
| C+ / C / C- | 2.30 / 2.00 / 1.70 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F and WF | 0.00 |
An A+ is worth 4.30, and there is no D+ or D-. A WF (withdrawal while failing) counts exactly like an F. I, IP, W, S, U, V (audit), K (credit by exam) and NR carry no quality points.
A D earns credit, but it doesn't satisfy courses that require a C, and no more than 12 semester hours of D can count toward your degree.
Calculating Your GSU GPA
Multiply each course's hours by its quality points, then divide the total by GPA hours. Example: 3 hours of A+ (12.9), 3 of B+ (9.9), 4 of A- (14.8), 3 of C (6.0) and 2 of B (6.0) give 49.6 ÷ 15 = 3.31.
Repeat-to-Replace
If you retake a course at Georgia State and earn a higher grade, you can ask to have the first grade excluded from your institutional GPA. The conditions:
- At most four course grades, from four different courses.
- Only the first recorded grade can be replaced. If you take a course three times, the second or third grade can replace the first, but the third cannot replace the second.
- You must be seeking your first undergraduate degree, and the retake must be at GSU.
- W, S and U grades cannot be replaced, and neither can a grade given for an Academic Honesty violation.
- An approved request cannot be reversed, and all attempts remain on the transcript.
- It does not change GPAs calculated under state or federal rules, such as the HOPE scholarship GPA.
You apply after the retake is graded, or, if you need the higher grade to graduate, within the first two weeks of your final semester.
Dean's List and Graduation Honors
The Dean's List requires a term GPA of at least 3.5 on at least 9 semester hours at Georgia State in fall or spring, with no incompletes that term and an overall GSU GPA of at least 2.0.
| Graduation honor | Cumulative GSU GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.50–3.69 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.70–3.89 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.90 and higher |
Honors use your cumulative Georgia State GPA after final grades. Because of the 4.30 A+, it is possible to exceed 4.00.
Warning, Supervision, Probation and Exclusion
GSU uses four escalating levels whenever your cumulative Georgia State GPA is below 2.0:
| Level | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Warning | Below 2.0 and not on supervision or probation last term |
| Supervision | Below 2.0 after a term on warning |
| Probation | Below 2.0 after a term on supervision |
| Exclusion | Below 2.0 after a term on probation; you cannot enroll |
The 2.3 rule: if you attempt 6 or more hours and earn a term GPA of 2.3 or better, you stay at your current level instead of moving to the next one, even if your cumulative GPA is still below 2.0. Students on warning or supervision join the Academic Improvement Program, which requires adviser-approved registration and limits the course load.
Incompletes
An I is only possible if you have finished most of the major assignments and are passing. Your instructor sets the conditions, and registering for the course again does not remove the I. If you don't meet the conditions by the deadline, the I becomes an F, and you cannot graduate with an I on your record.
