Grading system: Mercer half-point scale, A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.5, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0. No minus grades; FQ and WF count as 0, and S, U, I, IP, AU and W are left out.

Mercer's Half-Point Grades

Grade Interpretation Quality points per hour
AExcellent4.0
B+Good3.5
BGood3.0
C+Average2.5
CAverage2.0
DPoor1.0
F / FQ / WFFailure0

Mercer has no minus grades and no A+, and its plus grades sit halfway between letters. A B+ is worth 3.5, not the 3.33 most calculators assume. FQ (stopped attending) and WF (withdrawal failing) both count as 0. S, U, excused absence and incomplete marks, IP, AU, W and Z are not calculated in the GPA.

Example: 3 hours of B+ (10.5), 4 of A (16.0), 3 of C+ (7.5), 3 of B (9.0) and 3 of A (12.0) give 55.0 ÷ 16 = 3.44.

Satisfactory and Unsatisfactory Grades

Students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, the School of Business and the School of Music may choose S/U in some courses. An S requires work at the level of a C or better and adds hours without affecting the GPA. A U earns no hours and carries no GPA penalty.

Repeating Courses: The Final Attempt Counts

No course may be taken more than twice, and you may repeat at most four courses without an associate dean's permission. The grade from your final attempt is used in the cumulative GPA, whether it is higher or lower, and the earlier grade stays on the transcript. Credit is granted once. A W or an audit in the repeat does not remove the earlier grade from the GPA.

Repeats matter differently for honors, as explained below.

President's List and Dean's Lists

List Minimum letter-graded hours Semester GPA
President's List124.00
Dean's List123.55
Dean's List83.66

Extra conditions apply: no grade below C, an S in any S/U work beyond the minimum letter-graded hours, and no Honor Code violation that term.

Graduation With Honors: Two Averages

Honor GPA
Cum laude3.50
Magna cum laude3.70
Summa cum laude3.85

You need at least 32 semester hours and a 3.50 at Mercer. Mercer checks two averages, and you must qualify on both:

  • The Mercer average, in which repeated courses count only the final attempt.
  • The total average, which includes every attempt of repeated courses and all college work at every institution, including transfer credit.

A repeat can therefore raise your Mercer GPA without helping your honors. A student found responsible for an Honor Code violation cannot graduate with honors.

Warning, Probation and Suspension

Any cumulative average below 2.0 brings an academic warning. Probation starts only below a minimum that rises with your hours:

Total hours earned Minimum cumulative GPA
0–161.40
17–321.70
33–481.80
49–631.90
64–1282.00

Missing the required minimum on three consecutive occasions (summer included) can bring a one-term suspension. A full-time student who fails to pass at least three hours in a term can also be suspended. Warning, probation and suspension notations are added to the transcript.
