Grading system: Emory College, A = 4.0 and A- = 3.7 down to D = 1.0 and F = 0. There is no A+ or D-; W, WU, S and U are left out, while IF and WF count as F.

Emory College Quality Points

Grade Quality points per hour
A / A-4.0 / 3.7
B+ / B / B-3.3 / 3.0 / 2.7
C+ / C / C-2.3 / 2.0 / 1.7
D+ / D1.3 / 1.0
F0.0

The scale has no A+ and no D-. Under S/U grading, an S earns credit without quality points, and a U earns neither. W, WU, S and U are left out of the GPA, but IF (an unfinished incomplete) and WF (withdrew failing) both count as an F. Individual instructors set the cutoffs for each letter, so check your syllabus.

Calculating Your Emory GPA

GPA = total quality points ÷ GPA-eligible credit hours

Example: a 4-hour course at A- (14.8), a 3-hour course at B+ (9.9), a 4-hour course at A (16.0) and a 3-hour course at C (6.0) give 46.7 ÷ 14 = 3.34.

Repeating a Course: Every Attempt Counts

Emory College has no grade replacement. When you repeat a course, every attempt, including the original, is calculated in your GPA, and the original grade stays on the transcript.

  • You may retake a course you failed, with no more than three attempts to pass it.
  • Repeating a course you already passed requires approval from your adviser and a dean, and it earns no additional degree credit.

For example, an F in a 3-hour course followed by a B adds 9 quality points over 6 hours, averaging 1.5 for that course. A retake raises your GPA only by adding a new grade, so enter both attempts in the calculator.

Incompletes

An incomplete must be approved by the Office for Undergraduate Education, and you must have finished at least half the course. The work is due during your next semester in residence, by the office's published deadline. If you don't return, you have twelve months. Missing the deadline turns the I into an IF, which counts as an F, or into the grade you would earn with the missing work scored as zero. All incompletes must be cleared before your degree is certified.

Academic Standing: GPA and Credit Milestones

Emory College reviews standing after fall, spring and summer. Good standing requires both a cumulative Emory GPA of 2.00 and a 2.00 term GPA each term, plus steady progress: 30 hours after two full-time semesters, 60 after four and 90 after six. A term of all U grades, or one where U grades make up half or more of your S/U hours, also puts you out of good standing.

  • Academic Advisory: still in good standing, but with three or more incompletes or overdue General Education requirements.
  • Academic Watch: you need a third full-time semester to reach a credit milestone.
  • Academic Warning: you miss a standard, such as a term GPA below 2.00. You can still enroll, but you need an Academic Plan of Action.
  • Academic Suspension: you miss the standards again while on warning. You can appeal and, if approved, enroll through the Academic Reengagement Program.

Because the 2.00 term GPA rule applies to every term, one bad semester can put you on warning even with a strong cumulative GPA.

Latin Honors: Top 30 Percent

Emory College awards Latin honors by GPA rank among graduates rather than by fixed cutoffs:

Honor Class rank
Summa cum laudeTop 5%
Magna cum laude5.01–15%
Cum laude15.01–30%

Because they depend on the class, the GPA needed for each honor changes from year to year. Departmental honors through a thesis or honors program are separate.
