Florida State University GPA Calculator

Florida State's pluses and minuses are worth a quarter point, so an A- is 3.75 and a B+ is 3.25, not the 3.67 and 3.33 most calculators use. Enter your courses below for your semester and cumulative GPA, then see how repeats, the Dean's List and graduation distinction work at FSU.

Grading system: FSU undergraduate, A = 4.00 and A- = 3.75 down to D- = 0.75 and F = 0. P, S, U, I, NG, W and WD carry no quality points; IE and GE count as 0.00.

FSU's Quarter-Point Scale

Florida State gives each plus and minus a quarter point, not the third of a point common elsewhere. The undergraduate values:

Grade Quality points per hour
A / A-4.00 / 3.75
B+ / B / B-3.25 / 3.00 / 2.75
C+ / C / C-2.25 / 2.00 / 1.75
D+ / D / D-1.25 / 1.00 / 0.75
F0.00

Only the College of Law uses thirds (A- 3.67, B+ 3.33) and an A+ of 4.33. For undergraduates, an A- in a 3-hour course is worth 11.25 points, not 11.01, so a calculator using 3.67 slightly underestimates FSU GPAs.

No quality points: P, S, U, I (incomplete), NG (no grade received), W and WD. An expired incomplete (IE) or expired no-grade (GE) counts as 0.00, the same as an F.

Three GPAs on Your FSU Transcript

FSU reports a semester or FSU cumulative GPA, a transfer credit GPA and a combined overall GPA. Retention and graduation use quality points divided by hours with letter grades. Grades earned elsewhere cannot raise an FSU GPA or cover a quality point deficiency.

Example: 3 hours of A- (11.25), 3 of B+ (9.75), 4 of A (16.00), 3 of C+ (6.75) and 2 of B (6.00) total 49.75 over 15 hours, a 3.32.

No Grade Forgiveness at FSU

FSU discontinued its grade forgiveness policy in Fall 2004. If you repeat a non-repeatable course, the new quality points are added to your FSU cumulative GPA, and the original grade stays in. You also cannot repeat a course in which you earned a C- or better unless it is designated as repeatable, and a repeat earns no additional credit.

For example, a D (1.00) in a 3-hour course followed by a B (3.00) adds 12 points over 6 hours, a 2.00 for that course. To model a retake in the calculator, keep the original grade and add the new one as a separate row.

Dean's List and President's List

Both lists require at least 12 hours of letter-graded (A–F) courses in the term:

  • Dean's List: a term GPA of 3.5, in every college.
  • President's List: a term GPA of 4.0.

S/U and pass/fail hours do not count toward the 12, so a term with 12 hours where one course is S/U does not qualify.

Degrees of Distinction

Distinction Overall average
Cum laude3.500
Magna cum laude3.700
Summa cum laude3.900

You must complete at least 40 semester hours of letter-graded work at FSU, including your final term, to be eligible.

Academic Status

FSU's five academic statuses are Good Standing, Academic Probation, Academic Probation Continued, Dismissed, and Dismissed, Reinstated on Academic Probation. A term in which you take only S/U or pass/fail courses, or withdraw completely, produces no quality points and a 0.00 term GPA. In that case your standing stays where it was after your last term, so plan S/U-only terms carefully.

Florida's Summer Credit Rule

Under a Florida Board of Governors rule, students who enter a Florida state university with fewer than 60 semester hours of credit must earn at least nine credit hours in one or more summer terms at a state university before graduating, unless the requirement is waived for hardship. It does not change your GPA, but it affects how you plan the terms that build it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an A- worth at FSU?

3.75 quality points per hour. FSU's pluses and minuses move in quarter points, so a B+ is 3.25.

Does FSU have grade forgiveness?

No. FSU discontinued grade forgiveness in Fall 2004. A repeated course adds its quality points to your cumulative GPA, and the original grade still counts.

What GPA is the Dean's List at FSU?

A 3.5 term GPA on at least 12 letter-graded hours. A 4.0 on 12 or more letter-graded hours earns the President's List.

What GPA is summa cum laude at FSU?

3.900, with at least 40 letter-graded hours at FSU including the final term. Magna cum laude is 3.700 and cum laude 3.500.

Do grades from another school change my FSU GPA?

No. Transfer grades appear in a separate transfer GPA and cannot raise your FSU cumulative GPA.
