Grading system: UF (since May 11, 2009), A = 4.0, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33 down to D- = 0.67, and E = 0. WF, I and NG also count as 0; S, U, W, H, I* and N* are left out.

UF's Grade Points

Grade Points Grade Points
A4.0C2.0
A-3.67C-1.67
B+3.33D+1.33
B3.0D1.0
B-2.67D-0.67
C+2.33E (fail)0

UF's failing grade is E. There's no A+. Courses taken before May 11, 2009 used an older half-point scale (B+ = 3.5), so older transcripts can look different.

UF shows GPAs to the hundredths place and never rounds up: a 3.248 is a 3.24. Grades from other colleges are never averaged into your UF GPA. Example: 3 credits of A- (11.01), 4 of B+ (13.32), 3 of B (9.00), 3 of C+ (6.99) and 2 of A (8.00) give 48.32 ÷ 15 = 3.221, recorded as 3.22.

Repeating a Course: Every Attempt Counts

This is UF's biggest trap. A repeated UF course counts in your GPA as many times as you take it; the new grade does not replace the old one. Credit is awarded only once.

  • Once you earn a C (2.0) or higher, you can't repeat the course without an approved college petition.
  • A repeat taken at another school doesn't touch your UF GPA; only UF grades count.
  • If you arrived with AP or IB credit and then take and pass the same course at UF, you get the UF grade and lose the exam credit.

Watch out: passing a course you failed earns you the credit, but the E stays in your average. To model it here, enter both attempts as separate rows.

Incompletes and the 150-Day Rule

An incomplete first appears as I* (or N* if no grade was reported) and doesn't count. If it hasn't been changed after 150 days, it becomes a failing I or NG worth 0 in your GPA. Graduating students don't get I*: they receive a failing I directly.

S/U: One Elective per Term

If you're in good standing and not on probation, you can take one course per term S/U, in electives only; General Education and Writing Requirement courses are excluded. An S requires a C (2.0) or better. The deadline is Friday of the third week in fall, spring and Summer C. Once approved, it can't be switched back to a letter grade.

President's Honor Roll and Dean's List

The President's Honor Roll needs a perfect 4.0 on at least 15 graded credits in fall or spring (12 in summer). Dean's List rules belong to each college:

College GPA Fall/spring credits
Agricultural and Life Sciences3.7012
The Arts3.5012
Warrington (Business)3.70 or 3.5012 or 15
Design, Construction and Planning3.7012
Education3.7512
Engineering3.2014
Health and Human Performance3.50 or 3.7015 or 12
Journalism and Communications3.7512
Liberal Arts and Sciences3.7512 letter-graded, no drops or incompletes
Pharmacy3.5012
Public Health and Health Professions3.5015

S/U and internship courses don't count, and a 3.495 is a 3.49, not 3.50.

Graduation Honors Use Your Upper-Division GPA

UF awards cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude, but the rules are set by college and major, and many use your upper-division GPA, meaning courses taken after you reach 60 credits. For example, Art and Art History requires 3.5 (cum), 3.75 (magna) and 3.90 (summa) upper-division GPAs, plus a thesis or project for magna and summa. Accounting uses 3.2, 3.6 and 3.8 in upper-division accounting and overall.

Transfer and S/U credits are excluded, and magna and summa usually also need your major's extra requirements. Check your major's line in the UF catalog.

Probation and the Dismissal Table

A UF cumulative GPA below 2.0 can put you on academic probation until it's back to 2.0. Dismissal uses a grade point deficit table: you're dismissed if your GPA is at or below the figure for your UF cumulative credits. Selected rows:

UF cumulative credits Dismissed at or below
80.12
120.75
151.00
201.25
301.50
401.62
501.70
601.75

These credits exclude S/U, withdrawn courses and credits removed by the repeat or non-degree policies. You need at least a 2.0 UF GPA to graduate.
