West Virginia University (WVU) GPA Calculator
WVU records plus and minus grades on your transcript, but they carry no extra weight: an A+, A and A- are all 4 grade points, a B+ through B- are all 3, and so on. Enter your courses below for your term and overall GPA, then see how WVU's D/F repeat, pass/fail, honor lists and Latin honors work.

Why a B+ and a B- Count the Same at WVU
| Grades | Grade points per credit |
|---|---|
| A+, A, A- | 4 |
| B+, B, B- | 3 |
| C+, C, C- | 2 |
| D+, D, D- | 1 |
| F, FNA, FSA, IF, UF | 0 |
Most calculators give an A- 3.67 or 3.7. At WVU it's a full 4, and a B- is a full 3. A typical plus/minus calculator will therefore underestimate a WVU GPA that includes minus grades and overestimate one with plus grades. This calculator uses WVU's values.
Example: 3 credits of A- (12), 4 of B+ (12), 3 of B- (9), 3 of C+ (6) and 3 of A (12) give 51 ÷ 16 = 3.19. On a standard 3.67/3.33 scale, the same grades would give 3.00.
The D/F Repeat Policy
If you earned a D or F, you can repeat the course and have the original grade excluded from your institutional GPA; only the second grade counts.
- Only the first graded attempt of a course is eligible.
- The original grade stays on the transcript, marked E (excluded), and the repeat is marked I (included).
- A course taken at a WVU location must be repeated at a WVU location. Transfer coursework taken before enrolling at WVU can be D/F repeated at WVU.
- An Unforgivable F (UF) from academic dishonesty can never be D/F repeated.
Watch out: with the whole D range worth 1 point, a D+ gets no credit for being close to a C; if you need the GPA, the D/F repeat is your tool. Enter only the repeat grade in the calculator.
Pass/Fail: 4 Hours a Term, 18 Total
Full-time, degree-seeking students who have completed 15 credits with a 2.0 GPA can take up to four hours per term pass/fail, to a maximum of 18 credits. P grades carry no grade value.
President's List and Dean's List
| List | Term GPA |
|---|---|
| President's List | 4.0 |
| Dean's List | 3.5 or higher |
You need at least 12 credit hours of graded courses with no I (incomplete) or NR (not reported) grades. Because an A- counts as 4, a term of A's and A-'s still earns the President's List.
Graduation With Latin Honors
| Honor | Overall GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.4 to below 3.6 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.6 to below 3.8 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.8 or higher |
The honors GPA uses all baccalaureate-level work attempted, including transfer work, through your final semester; failing grades count as hours attempted, while P and S hours are excluded. Students who received academic forgiveness can't graduate with honors. The commencement program uses your GPA through the next-to-last semester.
Academic Notice, Probation and Suspension
| Status | Trigger (end of fall or spring) |
|---|---|
| Academic Notice | Overall GPA below 2.0 for the first time |
| Probation | Overall GPA below 2.0 for the second time |
| First suspension | Overall GPA below 2.0 at the end of three regular terms, consecutive or not; one calendar year |
| Later suspensions | Two more terms below 2.0 after returning; one year, then three years |
Raising your overall GPA to 2.0 through winter intersession courses in the WVU system restores good standing automatically.
