Liberty's Grade Scale
| Grade | Meaning | Quality points per hour |
|---|---|---|
| A | Excellent | 4 |
| B | Good | 3 |
| C | Average | 2 |
| D | Poor | 1 |
| F / FN | Failure / failure for non-attendance | 0 |
There are no pluses or minuses. GPA hours include A, B, C, D, F and FN, while AU, I, IP, NF, NP, P, Q (academic amnesty), R1 and W are left out. Only courses taken at Liberty count, and the cumulative GPA covers everything at your current level (undergraduate, for example), even across a change of major or a break in enrollment.
Liberty calculates GPA to the hundredths and does not round. Example: 3 hours of B (9), 4 of A (16), 3 of A (12), 3 of C (6) and 3 of B (9) give 52 ÷ 16 = 3.25.
Repeating a Course: Highest Grade Counts, No Limit
Liberty's Undergraduate Repeat Policy applies automatically at the end of each semester, including summer, once you successfully repeat a course:
- Only the highest grade counts in your GPA, and the lower grades are marked E (excluded) on the transcript.
- The included grade is marked I.
- Excluded grades drop out of GPA hours and earned hours but stay on the record as attempted hours, which can affect financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress.
- The catalog sets no limit on the number of different courses you can repeat.
To model a repeat, enter only the better grade in the calculator.
Dean's List
Associate and bachelor's students earning 12 or more GPA hours with a term GPA of 3.50 or above make the Dean's List. Pass/fail hours don't count toward the 12. Certificate students are not eligible.
Graduation Honors Depend on Your Liberty Hours
The cutoffs are higher if you earned fewer than 60 hours at Liberty:
| Honor | 60+ hours at Liberty | Under 60 hours at Liberty |
|---|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.50–3.66 | 3.60–3.76 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.67–3.84 | 3.77–3.94 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.85–4.00 | 3.95–4.00 |
The honor in the Commencement program and on your cord is based on your GPA around April 1 of your graduation year. The diploma and transcript use your final GPA, which is not rounded, so a 3.499 does not become cum laude.
Academic Standing Levels
The minimum cumulative GPA rises with the hours you have earned:
| Level | Hours earned | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0–23.99 | 1.50 |
| 2 | 24–47.99 | 1.65 |
| 3 | 48–71.99 | 1.85 |
| 4 | 72 or more | 2.00 |
Standing is checked after fall and spring. If you fall below your level's minimum, you move through academic warning, probation, suspension and dismissal. Resident students on warning are limited to 12–14 hours and must take a one-credit academic success course. Students who are not in good standing cannot travel to represent the university.
