University of Utah GPA Calculator
The University of Utah grades A through D- and fails students with an E, not an F. From August 1, 2026, a repeated course keeps your highest grade. Enter your courses below for your semester and cumulative GPA, then see how Utah's repeat rule, CR/NC, amnesty, Dean's List and Latin honors work.

Utah's Grade Points
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | C | 2.0 |
| A- | 3.7 | C- | 1.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 | D+ | 1.3 |
| B | 3.0 | D | 1.0 |
| B- | 2.7 | D- | 0.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 | E / EU | 0.0 |
The failing grade is E, and an EU (on the roster but never participated) counts the same. There's no A+.
Watch out: the conversion table in the current Policy 6-100 lists D+ as 1.3 and then "D" as 0.7, with no separate D- row, although the policy's grade list includes D+, D and D-. Earlier versions of the policy gave D = 1.0 and D- = 0.7, which this calculator uses. If you have a D or D-, check your transcript's GPA against the calculator.
Example: 3 credits of A- (11.1), 4 of B+ (13.2), 3 of A (12.0), 3 of C+ (6.9) and 3 of B (9.0) give 52.2 ÷ 16 = 3.26.
Repeating a Course: Highest Grade From August 2026
Utah's revised Policy 6-100 changed the repeat rule on August 1, 2026:
| Course repeated | Grade used in your GPA |
|---|---|
| On or after August 1, 2026 | The highest grade earned |
| Before August 1, 2026 | The most recent grade, even if lower |
- You can attempt a course twice on your own; a third attempt needs your advisor's approval, and more needs the dean's.
- Any grade counts as an attempt, including W, I, NC, EU and audit, and so do equivalent transfer and AP/IB/CLEP credit.
- If the repeat ends in NC, U, W, AU, I or T, your earlier grade stays in the GPA.
- Credit counts toward graduation only once.
Credit/No Credit, Amnesty and Renewal
Undergraduates may choose CR/NC in a limited number of courses (see Rule R6-100A), up to the withdrawal deadline. A through C- becomes CR, and D+ or lower becomes NC. Neither counts in your GPA.
Academic amnesty can remove grades below C- from up to two consecutive semesters, once, after you complete 30 consecutive credit hours with a 2.0 GPA. Academic renewal can remove grades below C- earned at least four years earlier, also once. Neither can remove grades you're using toward degree requirements.
Dean's List and Latin Honors
You make the Dean's List with a term GPA of at least 3.5 on 12 or more earned credit hours.
| Latin honor | GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.5–3.699 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.7–3.899 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.9–4.0 |
You need at least 60 credit hours at the University of Utah. The university will reassess these thresholds every six years starting in 2032.
Academic Notices and Suspension
| Status | Trigger |
|---|---|
| First academic notice | Cumulative GPA below 2.0; registration hold |
| Second academic notice | Semester GPA below 2.0 in the next semester; you must meet Campus Advising Solutions |
| Academic suspension | Cumulative and semester GPA below 2.0 for three consecutive semesters; at least three semesters away |
Readmitted students need a 2.0 GPA every semester until their cumulative GPA reaches 2.0, or they face dismissal.
