University of Southern California (USC) GPA Calculator
The University of Southern California has no A+, grades in 0.3 steps (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3) and truncates GPAs instead of rounding. Enter your courses below for your semester and cumulative GPA, then see how USC's repeat rules, pass/no pass limits, Dean's List and university honors work.

USC's Grade Points
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | C | 2.0 |
| A- | 3.7 | C- | 1.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 | D+ | 1.3 |
| B | 3.0 | D | 1.0 |
| B- | 2.7 | D- | 0.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 | F / UW / IX | 0 |
USC uses no A+ (or F+ or F-). A D- is the minimum passing grade for undergraduate credit. UW (unofficial withdrawal) and IX (lapsed incomplete) both count as 0.
USC's GPA is truncated, not rounded. Example: 4 units of A- (14.8), 4 of B+ (13.2), 4 of A (16.0) and 4 of B (12.0) give 56.0 ÷ 16 = 3.50; a 3.4999 would be recorded as 3.49 and miss the Dean's List.
Repeating a Course at USC
No extra unit credit is ever earned for a repeat, and the rules depend on your original grade:
| Original grade | Can the repeat grade count? |
|---|---|
| B- or better | No; it can't be repeated for GPA credit |
| C+, C or C- | Only with a CAPP petition approved before you re-register |
| C- where the major requires a C | Yes, without a petition |
| D+ or below in your first two semesters (first-time freshmen) | Yes: up to three courses, and only the later grade counts, even if lower |
Spring-admitted first-year students get two such courses from their first semester, and transfer students get one. The repeat must be at USC for a letter grade, and it isn't available for grades from a conduct sanction.
Watch out: post hoc approval isn't granted, so petition before retaking a C. A prerequisite can't be repeated after you've completed the course that requires it.
Pass/No Pass: 24 Units
Up to 24 units of pass/no pass work can count toward an undergraduate degree, only 4 of them toward general education. A P requires C- quality or better. You choose by the 20 percent mark of the session and can switch back to a letter grade until 45 percent. Minor course work can't be P/NP, and WRIT 130, 150 and 340 don't meet writing requirements if taken P/NP.
Dean's List
Undergraduates with a declared major make the Dean's List with a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher on 12 or more letter-graded units. Any Incomplete must be removed first. USC transcripts don't show the Dean's List.
Graduation With University Honors
| Honor | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.5 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.7 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.9 |
You must meet the cutoff both on USC work and on USC plus transfer work, and the lower of the two decides your honor. USC doesn't honor other colleges' grade forgiveness: a transferable course retaken after a D+ or lower counts both grades in your transfer GPA.
Academic Notice and Disqualification
An overall USC GPA below 2.0 puts you on academic notice (formerly probation). You must meet an Academic Counseling counselor at least three times each semester and get advising clearance before registering.
You then have two semesters (summer excluded) to reach a 2.0 overall. If you earn at least a 2.3 semester GPA but are still under 2.0, you get another semester. Readmission after disqualification requires 12 approved transferable units elsewhere with a 3.0 GPA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does USC give A+ grades?
No. USC's highest grade is an A, worth 4.0.
Does USC round GPA?
No. USC truncates GPAs, so a 3.4999 is recorded as 3.49.
If I retake a class at USC, which grade counts?
It depends. First-time freshmen can replace up to three D+ or lower grades from their first two semesters. C-range grades need an approved CAPP petition before you re-register, and B- or better can't be repeated for GPA.
What GPA is the Dean's List at USC?
A 3.5 semester GPA on 12 or more letter-graded units, for students with a declared major.
What GPA is summa cum laude at USC?
3.9, met on both your USC GPA and your combined USC and transfer GPA. Magna cum laude is 3.7 and cum laude 3.5.
