UC Berkeley (Cal) GPA Calculator
At UC Berkeley an A+ is worth the same 4.0 as an A, and every plus or minus moves a grade by 0.3. Enter your courses below for your semester and cumulative UC GPA, then see how Berkeley's repeat rule, P/NP limit, Dean's List and graduation distinction work.

Berkeley's Grade Points
An A is 4, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1 and F is 0. A plus adds 0.3 and a minus subtracts 0.3, except that an A+ stays at 4.0, so a UC Berkeley GPA can't go above 4.0.
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A- | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C- | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ / D / D- | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| B- | 2.7 | F | 0 |
Your GPA covers courses taken in the University of California, including UC Berkeley Extension XB courses taken after you matriculate. Community college and other transfer grades don't enter it. Example: 4 units of A- (14.8), 4 of B+ (13.2), 3 of A (12.0) and 4 of B (12.0) give 52.0 ÷ 15 = 3.47.
Repeating a Course: The 12-Unit Rule
You may repeat only courses in which you earned a D+, D, D-, F or NP. In the College of Letters and Science:
- For your first 12 units of repeats, the second grade replaces the first in your GPA, even if it is lower.
- After 12 units, both grades count.
- A course can be repeated only once to replace a grade; a third attempt shows on the transcript but doesn't count in the GPA.
- A D or F must be repeated for a letter grade; after an NP you can repeat P/NP or letter-graded.
Watch out: if you repeat a course while an Incomplete is still on the record without your dean's prior approval, the I becomes an F. The repeat details above are the Letters and Science rules; other colleges may add conditions, so check with yours.
Passed/Not Passed: One-Third of Your Units
Undergraduates in good standing may take letter-graded courses P/NP. A P requires a C- or better, so a D earns credit under letter grading but becomes NP. P/NP units are capped at one-third of the 120 units needed to graduate (Education Abroad and UC exchange units included). Major requirements need faculty approval, and you can't repeat a letter-graded course as P/NP.
You can't switch to P/NP while on academic notice.
Incompletes Become F's
An I from fall must be finished 30 days before the next fall semester starts, and one from spring or summer 30 days before the next spring. If it isn't replaced in time it becomes an F (or NP) and counts from then on. Undergraduates with 12 or more units of I grades need the dean's permission to register.
Dean's Honors List (Letters and Science)
L&S has no fixed Dean's List GPA. You need 13 or more letter-graded units in a semester, a semester GPA in the top 10 percent of L&S undergraduates, and no I, NR or NP grades that term. Engineering, Haas, Chemistry and other colleges set their own criteria.
Distinction at Graduation
Campus-wide, honors at graduation go to roughly the top 3 percent (highest), next 7 percent (high) and next 10 percent of each college. For L&S graduates in fall 2025, spring 2026 and summer 2026 the cumulative UC GPA cutoffs were:
| Distinction | Minimum UC GPA | Share of class |
|---|---|---|
| Highest Distinction | 3.989 | Top 3% |
| High Distinction | 3.936 | Next 7% |
| Distinction in General Scholarship | 3.852 | Next 10% |
You need at least 50 UC units, 43 of them letter-graded, including at least 30 units at Berkeley. Honors to date (on the transcript) requires 12 letter-graded Berkeley units and a GPA at the distinction level. These cutoffs are much higher than the familiar 3.5 cum laude line.
Academic Notice and Disqualification (L&S)
After a fall or spring semester, you're placed on academic notice if your term GPA is below 1.5, your cumulative UC GPA is below 2.0, or you earned no letter grades at all.
To return to good standing, you need a 2.0 term GPA and a 2.0 cumulative UC GPA by the end of your next fall or spring semester, taking every course you can for a letter grade and at least 13 units. If you don't, you may get Continued Academic Notice or be disqualified and have to earn specific grades elsewhere before returning.
