Grading system: University of Arkansas, A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F and XF = 0, no plus or minus (except in the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design). I, AU, CR, R, S, W, P, PD and NC are left out of the GPA.

Arkansas's Whole-Letter Grades

Grade Meaning Grade points
AOutstanding achievement4
BGood achievement3
CAverage achievement2
DPoor but passing work1
F / XFFailure / failure for academic dishonesty0

Only the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design gives plus and minus grades; everywhere else a B+ and a B- are both a 3. A P (pass, C- or better) and PD (pass with a D) earn hours without affecting your GPA; NC earns nothing.

Example: 3 hours of A (12), 4 of B (12), 3 of B (9), 3 of C (6) and 1 of A (4) give 43 ÷ 14 = 3.07.

Grade Exclusion: Drop Up to Four D's or F's

Since fall 2020, you can petition to exclude up to 4 UA courses with a grade of D or F from your cumulative GPA. Unlike most schools' repeat policies, you don't have to retake the course. A lab taken the same semester can go with its lecture as one course.

  • The petition must be approved before your degree is conferred, and an exclusion can't be undone or moved to another course.
  • An excluded D loses its credit hours and can't satisfy degree requirements.
  • Courses approved for the older grade forgiveness count toward the four.
  • Past semester honors don't change, and financial aid progress still counts the courses.

Watch out: excluding a D in a required course means you must pass it again, and graduate and professional schools often recalculate your GPA with every attempt. In the calculator, simply leave an excluded course out.

Dean's List and Chancellor's List

List Semester GPA
Dean's List3.75–4.00
Chancellor's List4.00

You need at least 12 letter-graded hours. P grades are allowed only on hours beyond those 12, so a 15-hour student can have up to 3 hours of P. Any PD or NC that semester makes you ineligible. At 3.75, the bar is higher than the common 3.5.

Latin Honors Require the Honors College

At Arkansas, cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude are available only to members of the Honors College. Each college's honors program sets the rules, which include at least 12 honors credit hours and an undergraduate thesis; the Latin level depends on honors hours, thesis quality and GPA. A high GPA alone won't earn a Latin designation.

Graduating seniors can also be recognized as Senior Scholars (highest GPAs in each college, with at least half their degree at Arkansas) or First-Ranked Senior Scholars (a 4.00 on all work, where excluded grades are counted back in).

Probation, Suspension and Dismissal

Standing is checked after every fall, spring and summer term. A cumulative GPA below 2.0 with more than three hours attempted puts you on probation. What you need the next term depends on your hours:

Cumulative hours attempted Stay on probation with a semester GPA of Removed from probation at
4–301.8 or higher2.0 cumulative
More than 302.0 or higher2.0 cumulative

Miss that and you are suspended for one major semester plus the adjoining summer and intersessions. After returning, you need a 2.00 semester GPA every term until your cumulative reaches 2.0, or you are dismissed. After a first dismissal, a year away and 12 hours of qualifying coursework with a 3.0 elsewhere earn automatic readmission.
