Grading system: Rutgers, A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.5, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. No A-, B-, C- or D+; P/NC, W, S/U and courses with E or J credit prefixes are left out of the GPA.

Rutgers' Seven Grades

Grade Definition Numerical equivalent
AOutstanding4.0
B+3.5
BGood3.0
C+2.5
CSatisfactory2.0
DPoor1.0
FFailure0.0

Rutgers has no minus grades and no D+, and each plus is worth half a point. A B+ is 3.5, not the 3.3 most calculators assume. A standard calculator therefore gets Rutgers GPAs wrong, which is why the calculator above uses the Rutgers values.

Example: 4 credits of B+ (14.0), 3 of A (12.0), 3 of C+ (7.5), 3 of B (9.0) and 1 of A (4.0) give 46.5 ÷ 14 = 3.32.

This page follows the Rutgers-New Brunswick catalog and its School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) rules. Newark, Camden and some professional schools set their own repeat, probation and pass/no credit rules.

Temporary Grades and Credit Prefixes

Incomplete work is recorded as a temporary grade such as TB or TC, where the letter is the grade you get if the work stays unfinished. Fall T grades must be completed by May 1, and spring and summer ones by December 1. A TZ or NG left unresolved after the next semester becomes an F.

Transcript prefixes change how a course counts: E means no credit and not in the GPA, J means credit but not in the GPA (used for courses taken in high school), K means no credit but in the GPA, and R marks a repeat.

Repeating a Course: Removing a D or F

Normally, both the original grade and the repeat count in your GPA. For up to 16 credits in no more than four courses, however, repeating a course in which you earned a D or F removes the old grade from your Rutgers GPA:

  • The old grade stays on the transcript with an E prefix, and the new one gets an R prefix and counts.
  • The repeat must be taken at Rutgers-New Brunswick, and each course can use the policy only once.
  • If you earn a D or F again, only the second grade counts.
  • It can't remove an F given for academic dishonesty, an XF can't be repeated under it, and it doesn't change past Dean's Lists or academic standing.

Watch out: repeating a course you passed with a C or better earns E credit, meaning no credit and no GPA effect, and SAS strongly discourages it.

Pass/No Credit Only Near Graduation

In SAS you can use Pass/No Credit only after completing 90 credits, and only in your last two semesters: up to two courses (8 credits maximum, one per semester). An A, B or C becomes Pass; a D or F becomes No Credit. Neither counts in your GPA.

It can't be used for major, minor or SAS Core courses, honors courses or study abroad, winter session courses, or any course that could satisfy an outstanding degree requirement. Once approved, it can't be reversed.

Dean's List: 3.500 on 12 Letter-Graded Credits

Full-time students need a semester GPA of 3.500 or better on at least 12 credits with letter grades; Pass/No Credit and E credits don't count. SAS nontraditional and approved reduced-load students qualify with a 3.500 over every 12 letter-graded credits. Repeating a course later doesn't make you eligible retroactively.

Graduation With Honors

Honor Rutgers cumulative GPA
Cum laude3.500
Magna cum laude3.700
Summa cum laude3.850

Rutgers does not round up for honors: a 3.849 is magna, not summa. Only your Rutgers GPA counts; transfer grades don't.

Warning, Probation and Suspension (SAS)

Status Trigger Limits
Academic warningFirst semester GPA below 2.000 (or after a satisfactory semester)No more than 16 credits; advising conditions may apply
Academic probationSemester GPA below 2.000 for two or more consecutive semestersNo more than 16 credits; must meet an advisor
Suspension or dismissalCumulative GPA below a graduated standard, reviewed each springBased on graduation year and semesters enrolled

A semester GPA of 2.000 restores satisfactory standing. SAS standing is based on the semester GPA, while suspension is based on the cumulative GPA. Suspended students can sometimes reverse it by raising their cumulative GPA in the Rutgers-New Brunswick Summer Session right after.
