Kent State's Grade Scale
| Grade | Points | Kent State's description |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.000 | Superior scholarship |
| A- / B+ | 3.700 / 3.300 | |
| B | 3.000 | Good performance |
| B- / C+ | 2.700 / 2.300 | |
| C | 2.000 | Fair or average performance |
| C- / D+ | 1.700 / 1.300 | |
| D | 1.000 | Poor but passing |
| F | 0.000 | Failure |
There is no A+ and no D-. S (satisfactory) earns credit without affecting your GPA, and U does not count either. Example: 3 hours of A- (11.1), 3 of B+ (9.9), 4 of A (16.0), 3 of C (6.0) and 2 of B (6.0) give 49.0 ÷ 15 = 3.27.
Repeats: Your Highest Grade Counts, Up to Three Attempts
You may take an undergraduate course up to three times, and a withdrawal counts as an attempt. For your overall GPA, program GPA and credit totals, Kent State uses only the highest grade among all attempts, whichever attempt it came from. A worse retake can't hurt you. The recalculation happens automatically at the end of the term.
There are three catches:
- Latin honors use every attempt. The honors GPA includes all grades, including those your overall GPA drops.
- Graduate schools, other institutions and some Kent State programs may also count all attempts.
- Repeating a course somewhere else does not change your Kent State GPA.
For example, an F then a B in a 3-hour course counts as a B (3.0) in your overall GPA, but as a 1.5 average (9 points over 6 hours) in your Latin honors GPA.
Dean's List and President's List
- President's List: a 4.000 term GPA on 12 or more letter-graded hours.
- Dean's List (full-time): a term GPA of at least 3.400 on 12 or more letter-graded hours. The 3.400 threshold is lower than the common 3.5.
- Dean's List (part-time): an overall GPA of at least 3.400 on 12 or more letter-graded hours accumulated over the previous summer, fall and spring, compiled each spring.
Latin Honors
| Honor | Kent State GPA (honors calculation) |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.500–3.699 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.700–3.899 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.900–4.000 |
To qualify, you need either 60 or more credit hours at Kent State with a 3.500 Kent State GPA, or 30 to 59 Kent State hours with a 3.500 Kent State GPA and a 3.500 transfer GPA. The honors GPA is taken to three decimals and not rounded up, so a 3.4996 does not qualify. It includes every grade, including repeated and adjusted ones.
Good Standing and Probation
Good academic standing means an overall GPA of at least 2.000, which is also the minimum to graduate, along with a 2.000 in your major, minor or certificate. Below 2.000 overall, you are placed on academic probation. Some programs set higher GPA minimums than the university, and these are listed on the program's catalog page and in your GPS degree audit.
