Mason's Grade Scale
| Grade | Quality points |
|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.00 |
| A- | 3.67 |
| B+ / B / B- | 3.33 / 3.00 / 2.67 |
| C+ / C / C- | 2.33 / 2.00 / 1.67 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
The A+ adds nothing to the GPA, and there is no D+ or D-. S, NC, IN (incomplete), AB (absent with permission), SP (special provision) and NA (never attended) are left out of the GPA. Mason's GPA hours are the credits graded A+ through F.
Current GPA vs. Cumulative GPA
Mason uses the two GPAs for different decisions. Your current (term) GPA decides the Dean's List. Your cumulative GPA on all Mason credit governs good standing, warning, probation, suspension, dismissal, graduation and university honors.
Example term: 3 credits of A+ (12.00), 3 of A- (11.01), 4 of B+ (13.32), 3 of C (6.00) and 2 of B (6.00) give 48.33 ÷ 15 = 3.22.
Retaking a Course: The Latest Grade Replaces the Old One
When you retake a course at Mason, the new grade replaces the earlier one in your cumulative GPA, even if it is lower. Earlier attempts stay on the transcript, and a replaced grade earns no credit toward graduation. The replacement does not rewrite history: Dean's List or academic standing notations from the earlier semester stay as they were.
Because a lower retake grade still wins, only repeat a course when you are confident of doing better, and model it in the calculator by entering just the new grade.
Dean's List
Mason's Dean's List is open to part-time students too. You need at least 6 credits in the semester (not counting S/NC courses), a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher, and no grade below C. A single C- disqualifies you, even with an otherwise strong term.
Graduation Honors
With at least 60 credits earned at Mason, your cumulative GPA determines Latin honors:
| Honor | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.50 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.70 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.90 |
With 45 to 59 Mason credits, you graduate "with recognition" instead, which requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.80.
Warning, Probation, Suspension and Dismissal
- Academic warning: a term GPA below 2.00 with your cumulative GPA still at 2.00 or higher, or a first term below 2.00. You are still in good standing.
- Academic probation: after a previous warning, another term with both your term and cumulative GPA below 2.00.
- Academic suspension: after a previous probation, another term with both GPAs below 2.00. A first and a second suspension are possible.
- Academic dismissal: after a second suspension, another term with both GPAs below 2.00. Dismissal is permanent.
Students on first-term warning or on probation are limited to 13 credits in the following terms, until their cumulative GPA reaches 2.00.
Incompletes
If you receive an IN, you must finish the work by the end of the 9th week of the next term (summer doesn't count), and your instructor must submit the grade by the end of the 10th week.
