ASU's Scale: Where the Gaps Are
Arizona State's plus/minus scale has two quirks. At the top, an A+ is worth 4.33. Near the bottom, there is no C- and no D+: after a C (2.00) the next grade down is a D (1.00). ASU's failing grade is an E, not an F.
| Grade | Points |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.33 |
| A / A- | 4.00 / 3.67 |
| B+ / B / B- | 3.33 / 3.00 / 2.67 |
| C+ / C | 2.33 / 2.00 |
| D | 1.00 |
| E | 0.00 (failing) |
The A+ can push a single semester above 4.00, but ASU caps the cumulative GPA at 4.00. If the calculator shows a cumulative figure above 4.00, your official record will show 4.00.
Working Out an ASU Semester GPA
Grade points for each course are its credit hours multiplied by the grade value. Add them up and divide by graded hours. Marks such as P (pass), Y (satisfactory), W (withdrawal), I (incomplete), X (audit), NR (no report) and Z (in progress) are left out.
Example 15-hour semester: 3 hours of A+ (12.99), 3 of B+ (9.99), 4 of A- (14.68), 3 of C+ (6.99) and 2 of A (8.00). Total 52.65 ÷ 15 = 3.51, which clears the 3.50 Dean's List line.
Repeating a Course to Delete a D or E
ASU lets you remove a low grade from your GPA, with limits. You can repeat a course in which you earned a D or E (also a W or X), and each such course may be repeated only once.
- To have the original D or E deleted from your GPA, you must repeat the course at ASU.
- For students admitted from fall 2008 on, ASU describes the allowance as up to 12 hours of repeated coursework for grade replacement, covering both lower- and upper-division courses.
- The original attempt still appears on the transcript.
A C or better cannot be replaced, so there is no benefit to repeating a course you passed with a C just to raise your GPA.
Dean's List
You make the Dean's List by earning a semester GPA of 3.50 or higher on 12 or more graded hours taken in residence at ASU. "Graded" means A+ through E, so pass/fail (P/Y) hours do not count toward the 12.
Graduation With Academic Recognition
ASU recognizes graduating undergraduates with fixed GPA bands:
| Honor | GPA range |
|---|---|
| Summa cum laude | 3.80–4.00 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.60–3.79 |
| Cum laude | 3.40–3.59 |
You also need at least 56 hours of resident work at ASU. Transfer students should count their remaining ASU hours early, because a strong GPA does not qualify without the residency hours.
Good Standing, Warning, Probation and Disqualification
Good standing at ASU means a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00. Below that:
- Academic warning: falling short in your first term at ASU.
- Academic probation: not improving after a warning, or dropping below 2.00 in any later term. You then have a semester to bring your cumulative or semester GPA up to the 2.00 standard.
- Academic disqualification: decided by your college when probation conditions aren't met. A disqualified student cannot register for the next fall or spring semester.
Some colleges set higher GPA standards than the university minimum, so check your college's rules as well.
Incompletes
An I (incomplete) has no effect on your GPA while it stands. Your instructor sets the completion date, which cannot be more than one calendar year after the I is recorded.
