Grading system: University of Arizona, A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, E = 0, no plus or minus. S, P, F, I, W and other non-regular grades are left out of the GPA.

Arizona's Regular Grades

Grade Grade points
A4
B3
C2
D1
E (failing)0

Undergraduates get no plus or minus grades; only the College of Law uses them. The failing regular grade is E. The letter F exists, but only as the fail in Superior/Pass/Fail grading, where it doesn't count in the GPA. Your undergraduate GPA uses only UA credit and credit by exam, not transfer grades.

Example: 3 units of A (12), 4 of B (12), 3 of B (9), 3 of C (6) and 2 of A (8) give 47 ÷ 15 = 3.13.

Repeating a Course: Highest Grade Since Fall 2025

Since Fall 2025, when you repeat a regular-graded undergraduate course, your GPA reflects only the highest grade, automatically. You no longer file a Grade Replacement Opportunity (GRO) request, and a worse retake can't hurt you. Credit is earned only for the attempt that counts.

  • You can repeat a course with a C, D or E (or S, P, F, I, withdrawal or audit), but not an A or B.
  • No course can be attempted more than three times, and a withdrawal after the drop deadline counts as an attempt.
  • If the repeat ends in a non-regular grade such as W, P or I, your GPA keeps the earlier grade.

Watch out: repeats taken before Fall 2025 followed the older GRO rules, where the replacement grade counted even if lower. All attempts also stay on your record, and competitive majors and graduate programs may consider every one.

Pass/Fail: Up to 12 Courses, D Passes

Undergraduates may use the pass/fail option for up to 12 courses in total, but not for general education, major, minor or other required curriculum. A P means D-level work or better, so a D becomes a pass. Neither P nor F counts in your GPA, and courses offered only as pass/fail don't count toward the 12.

An Incomplete that isn't removed by the last day of finals one year later becomes a failing grade.

Dean's List

Notation Term GPA Letter-graded units
Dean's List with Distinction, full time4.00012
Dean's List with Distinction, half time4.0006
Dean's List, full time3.500–3.99912
Dean's List, half time3.500–3.9996

Only regular-graded (A–E) units count; S, P and F grades and unfinished incompletes don't. Since spring 2024, half-time students can qualify with 6 units.

Latin Honors

Honor GPA at degree conferral
Cum laude3.500–3.699
Magna cum laude3.700–3.899
Summa cum laude3.900–4.000

You need at least 45 graded units of University Credit with letter grades. Graduation with Honors is a separate distinction for completing the W. A. Franke Honors College program. With whole-letter grades, your GPA moves in bigger steps: one 3-unit B among 45 units of A drops you from 4.00 to 3.93.

Academic Eligibility: Review, Warning, Probation

Status is calculated after each fall and spring semester:

Status When it happens
EligibleCumulative GPA 2.00 or higher
Academic ReviewCumulative 2.00 or higher but semester GPA below 2.00
Academic WarningCumulative falls below 2.00 while Eligible
Academic ProbationStill below 2.00 after a Warning semester
IneligibleStill below 2.00 after a Probation semester; appeal possible

Reaching a 2.00 cumulative GPA at any point, even through summer or winter courses, returns you to Eligible.
