WMU's Honor Points: BA, CB and DC
| Grade | Honor points | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | Outstanding, exceptional, extraordinary |
| BA | 3.5 | Between B and A |
| B | 3.0 | Very good, high pass |
| CB | 2.5 | Between C and B |
| C | 2.0 | Satisfactory, acceptable, adequate |
| DC | 1.5 | Between D and C |
| D | 1.0 | Poor |
| E / X | 0.0 | Failure / unofficial withdrawal |
WMU calls grade points honor points. If you see BA on your transcript, it isn't a bachelor's degree: it's a grade worth 3.5. There are no A-, B+ or similar grades, so generic plus/minus calculators can't match WMU transcripts.
WMU's own example: 3 credits of A (12), 4 of BA (14), 4 of B (12) and 2 of E (0) give 38 ÷ 13 = 2.92. The 2 credits of E still count in the GPA, even though they don't count toward graduation.
Repeating a Course: The Most Recent Grade Counts
When you repeat a course, only the most recent grade is used in your GPA, even if it's lower. All grades stay on the transcript. If the first attempt had a letter grade, the repeat must also be taken for a letter grade.
Watch out: if the repeat ends in a W, CR or NC, the earlier grade stays in your GPA. Many graduate and professional schools recalculate GPAs with every attempt, so retaking a course you already passed may help less than you expect. To model a repeat, enter only the latest grade.
An Incomplete not finished within one calendar year becomes an E.
Credit/No Credit: C or Better
Any undergraduate, even on probation, can take eligible courses Credit/No Credit, choosing only during drop/add. Credit requires a C or better; below C is No Credit. Eligible courses include WMU Essential Studies, physical education and courses outside your major or minor. CR/NC courses count toward your degree but not your GPA, and instructors aren't told who chose the option.
Dean's List and Graduation Honors
The Dean's List requires a GPA of at least 3.50 on at least 12 letter-graded hours in fall or spring, or 6 in a summer session.
| Honor | GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.50–3.69 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.70–3.89 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.90–4.00 |
You need at least 30 letter-graded semester hours at WMU, and all WMU credits and honor points count. On the half-step scale, straight BA grades average exactly 3.50, the cum laude line.
