Grading system: UT Austin, A = 4.00, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33 down to D- = 0.67 and F = 0. No A+; I, Q, W, X, S, U and CR are left out of the GPA.

UT Austin's Grade Points

Grade Points Grade Points
A4.00C2.00
A-3.67C-1.67
B+3.33D+1.33
B3.00D1.00
B-2.67D-0.67
C+2.33F0.00

A D- is the lowest grade that earns undergraduate credit. Your cumulative University GPA includes all UT Austin work with a letter grade, including correspondence and extension, but not transfer grades. Credit by exam recorded since September 15, 2006 is CR and stays out of the GPA.

Example: 3 hours of A- (11.01), 3 of B+ (9.99), 4 of B (12.00), 3 of C (6.00) and 3 of A (12.00) give 51.00 ÷ 16 = 3.19.

Repeating a Course: Every Grade Counts

At UT Austin, all grades earned in University courses count in your GPA, whether repeated or not. There's no grade replacement or forgiveness. A retake adds a new grade to the average but never removes the old one.

Watch out: if you already earned a C- or better in a course, the grade points from retaking it can't be used to meet the minimum GPA for staying enrolled without your dean's written permission. To model a repeat here, enter both attempts as separate rows.

Pass/Fail and the X Symbol

Where a course allows either basis, you can switch between letter grade and pass/fail once, by the Academic Calendar deadline. Pass/fail credit doesn't count in the GPA, but an F in a pass/fail course does count when honors are calculated.

An X (temporary delay of grade) is given only for compelling non-academic reasons, and it also keeps you off the University Honors list that semester.

University Honors (Semester List)

UT's semester honor list is called University Honors. To qualify in a fall or spring semester you need at least 45 grade points and a GPA of 3.50 or higher on courses completed in residence, with no X symbols. The award is recorded on your transcript.

The 45-grade-point rule means a light load can fail even with a high GPA: 12 hours of straight A's is only 48 points, so in a 12-hour term one 3-hour B+ (45.99 points) still qualifies, but two (43.98 points) don't, despite a 3.67 GPA.

Graduation With University Honors

You need at least 60 hours at UT Austin, and the GPA includes every grade in residence, including failed and repeated courses. Each college sets its rank limits and minimum GPAs, within a university cap of 20% honors, 10% high honors and 4% highest honors. Minimums include:

College or school Honors High honors Highest honors
McCombs Business3.503.653.80
Cockrell Engineering3.503.703.85
Liberal Arts3.303.6673.867
Natural Sciences3.303.6673.867
Moody Communication3.4653.6653.865
Pharmacy3.603.703.80
Fine Arts3.303.603.85

Because only a set percentage of each May class can receive each level, the GPA you actually need may be higher than these minimums. August and December graduates use the May cutoffs.

Academic Warning and Dismissal

A cumulative University GPA below 2.00 puts you on academic warning, and you must carry at least 12 hours in fall and spring. At the end of a fall or spring semester on warning, you're dismissed if your GPA is below the line for your total college hours (transfer hours included):

Total college hours undertaken Dismissed if UT GPA is below
Below 151.50
15–441.70
45–591.85
60 or more2.00

New students who fail 12 or more hours in their first fall or spring semester can be dismissed without a warning period.
