UT's Quality Points

Grade UT description Quality points
ASuperior4.0
A- / B+Intermediate / Very good3.7 / 3.3
B / B-Good / Intermediate3.0 / 2.7
C+ / CFair / Satisfactory2.3 / 2.0
C- / D+ / D / D-Unsatisfactory1.7 / 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7
FFailure0.0

UT labels C- and below as "Unsatisfactory", even though they earn quality points. First-year composition courses use a shorter scale that stops at C, then NC. An Incomplete becomes an F if not removed within one calendar year or by graduation.

Example: 3 hours of A- (11.1), 4 of B+ (13.2), 3 of A (12.0), 3 of C+ (6.9) and 3 of B (9.0) give 52.2 ÷ 16 = 3.26.

Grade Replacement: Three Courses, 13 Hours

Normally all grades from repeated courses count in your GPA. UT's grade replacement policy lets the highest grade count instead, with limits:

  • Up to three undergraduate (100–400 level) course grades, totaling no more than 13 hours.
  • Only grades below C can be replaced; a C or higher (or an S) can't.
  • Repeating the same course more than once uses up additional replacements, but repeating after an NC or W doesn't count toward the three.
  • Transfer course grades can't be replaced.

Watch out: for Tennessee residents, only one grade replacement can raise your HOPE scholarship GPA, even though three raise your UT GPA. All attempts stay on your academic history.

Satisfactory/No Credit

You can switch an undergraduate course to S/NC through the add deadline, and the choice can't be undone later. An S requires a C or better; a C-, D or F becomes NC and earns no credit. Neither counts in your GPA, and you can't repeat a course S/NC after receiving a letter grade in it.

Dean's List Has Three Levels

UT announces each term's Dean's List in three tiers, using your semester GPA on at least 12 hours not taken S/NC:

Dean's List level Semester GPA
Cum laude3.5–3.69
Magna cum laude3.7–3.89
Summa cum laude3.9–4.0

Latin Honors at Graduation

Honor Cumulative GPA at the end of the graduation semester
Cum laude3.5–3.69
Magna cum laude3.7–3.89
Summa cum laude3.9–4.0

The cumulative average includes any graduate coursework taken as an undergraduate, and it's measured at the end of your final semester, so your last grades still count. Honors degrees from departmental honors programs separately require 12 honors hours, a 3.25 GPA and a senior thesis or project.

Probation and Dismissal

You're placed on academic probation when your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, or your semester GPA is below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters. On probation you must take part in directive advising and meet an advisor before every registration.

A student on probation is dismissed at the end of a semester in which both the cumulative and semester GPAs are below 2.0. A first dismissal lasts at least one full fall or spring semester; a second requires a year away and 12 credits elsewhere at a 2.5; a third is permanent.
