University of Pittsburgh GPA Calculator
Pitt's plus and minus grades move by a quarter point, not a third: A- = 3.75, B+ = 3.25, C+ = 2.25. A standard calculator therefore gets Pitt GPAs slightly wrong. Enter your courses below for your term and cumulative GPA, then see how Pitt's repeat rule, S/NC option, Dean's List and University Honors work.

Pitt's Quarter-Point Grades
| Grade | Pitt points | Typical elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.00 | 4.00 |
| A- | 3.75 | 3.67 or 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.25 | 3.33 or 3.3 |
| B | 3.00 | 3.00 |
| B- | 2.75 | 2.67 or 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.25 | 2.33 or 2.3 |
| C | 2.00 | 2.00 |
| C- | 1.75 | 1.67 or 1.7 |
| D+ / D / D- | 1.25 / 1.00 / 0.75 | 1.33 / 1.00 / 0.67 |
| F | 0.00 | 0.00 |
Pitt's minus grades are worth more than usual and its plus grades less. A transcript full of A-'s averages 3.75 at Pitt but 3.67 elsewhere, while straight B+'s give 3.25 instead of 3.33. An A+ is still 4.00.
Example: 3 credits of A- (11.25), 3 of B+ (9.75), 4 of B (12.00), 3 of C+ (6.75) and 3 of A (12.00) give 51.75 ÷ 16 = 3.23. On a 3.67/3.33 scale the same grades would come to 3.25.
Repeating a Course: The New Grade Replaces the Old
Under Pitt's university-wide rule, you can repeat almost any course, and the repeat grade replaces the earlier one in your GPA, even if it's lower. The old grade stays on your transcript, and no extra credit is earned.
- You get at most two repeats (three attempts); every grade except R or N counts as an attempt.
- If the repeat ends in W, R, N or NC, the previous grade stays in your GPA.
- You can't repeat a sequence course after passing a higher course in that sequence with a C or better.
- A repeat taken at another school never replaces a Pitt grade.
Watch out: your dean's office may require a signed academic improvement plan for repeat attempts. To model a repeat here, enter only the latest grade.
S/NC and H/S/U Options
Under S/NC, a C or better earns an S (credit, no GPA effect); a C- or lower becomes NC with no credit. Some courses use H/S/U instead: H for A- or higher, S for C through B+, U for C- or lower. H and S count toward graduation but not the GPA.
You must change your grade basis before 25 percent of the term has passed. Check with your advisor first, since majors limit S/NC use.
Dean's List (Dietrich School)
After fall and spring, Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences students make the Dean's List with at least 12 letter-graded credits (S/NC excluded), a term GPA of 3.50 or higher and no grade lower than a C. One C- rules you out even with a high GPA.
University Honors
| Honor (Dietrich School) | GPA at graduation |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.25 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.50 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.75 |
You need at least 60 letter-graded credits at Pitt, and all Pitt letter-graded coursework counts. These cutoffs are lower than the 3.5/3.7/3.9 common elsewhere. Other Pitt schools may set their own honors rules.
Academic Standing
| Level | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Good Academic Standing | Cumulative and term GPA of 2.0 or higher |
| Academic Review | Term GPA below 2.0, more than one unresolved incomplete, or a missed program requirement (still good standing) |
| Academic Notice | Continued problems after a review; comes with an academic improvement plan |
| Academic Leave / Dismissal | Not meeting the improvement plan; leave lasts up to one calendar year |
Students on notice can sometimes change programs instead of taking leave, and you must be in good standing to graduate.
