Grading system: University of Maryland, A+ and A = 4, A- = 3.7 down to D- = 0.7, F and XF = 0. P, S, I, NGR, W and AU are left out of the GPA.

UMD's Quality Points

Grade Points Grade Points
A+ / A4.0C+2.3
A-3.7C2.0
B+3.3C-1.7
B3.0D+ / D / D-1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7
B-2.7F / XF0

An A+ is worth 4.0, the same as an A. An XF (failure for academic dishonesty) counts as 0. A Pass under the pass-fail option requires a C- or better.

Example: 3 credits of A- (11.1), 4 of B+ (13.2), 3 of A (12.0), 3 of C+ (6.9) and 3 of B (9.0) give 52.2 ÷ 16 = 3.26.

Repeats: Higher Grade Only Early On

Normally every graded attempt of a repeated course (A+ through F) counts in your GPA. The higher grade replaces the lower only in two early situations:

  • The course you're repeating was taken in your first semester at UMD, or
  • It was taken within your first 24 credits attempted, transfer credits included (AP credit doesn't count), or in the semester you reached 24.

Limits: you may repeat any course once (two registrations), and no more than 18 credits in total. W's count as an attempt, and a third try needs your dean's approval and a plan.

Watch out: a D in a sophomore-year course stays in your GPA even after a retake. Your first semester is the one where a repeat can erase a bad grade. Separately, academic clemency can remove up to 16 credits for some returning students, though those grades still count for Latin honors.

Semester Academic Honors (Dean's List)

In fall and spring, undergraduates earn Semester Academic Honors with a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher on 12 or more credits graded the regular way. Pass-fail, satisfactory/unsatisfactory and audit courses don't count toward the 12.

Latin Honors: Top 10 Percent

Latin honors go roughly to the top 10 percent of each college's graduates, plus everyone with at least a 3.9:

Honor Share of college (previous year's GPAs)
Summa cum laudeTop 2%
Magna cum laudeNext 3%
Cum laudeNext 5%

You need at least 60 semester hours at UMD, of which no more than 6 can be pass-fail or satisfactory/fail, and nobody below a 3.3 is considered. The Registrar posts each college's exact GPA cutoffs every year. A 3.9 GPA guarantees Latin honors regardless of college.

Probation and Dismissal

Retention is based only on GPA. A cumulative GPA below 2.0 after any semester puts you on academic probation, with limits on adding and dropping without your advisor. What happens next depends on your credits:

Credits earned To avoid dismissal
Fewer than 60Earn at least a 2.0 semester GPA each probation semester, completing 9+ credits if full time
60 or moreBring your cumulative GPA back to 2.0 by the end of the probation semester

You'll also be dismissed if you're still below 2.0 cumulative at the end of the semester in which you complete 60 credits. Reaching 2.0 cumulative through winter or summer courses protects you from dismissal in the next semester.
