UH's Grade Points
| Grade | Points | UH description |
|---|---|---|
| A / A- | 4.00 / 3.67 | Outstanding achievement |
| B+ / B / B- | 3.33 / 3.00 / 2.67 | Commendable; exceeding all requirements |
| C+ / C / C- | 2.33 / 2.00 / 1.67 | Proficient; satisfactorily meeting requirements |
| D+ / D / D- | 1.33 / 1.00 / 0.67 | Poor; may not meet some college requirements |
| F | 0.00 | Failing |
There's no A+. A D- earns credit, but many programs require higher grades for majors, minors and prerequisites. Your cumulative GPA covers only work taken at UH.
Example: 3 hours of A- (11.01), 3 of B+ (9.99), 4 of B (12.00), 3 of C (6.00) and 3 of A (12.00) give 51.00 ÷ 16 = 3.19.
Watch out: an Incomplete becomes an F after a maximum of one year, and unreported grades (NR) become F or U 90 days after the term. For degree GPA checks, an open I already counts as an F.
Repeated Courses Count as New Courses
At UH a repeated course is treated as a new course in your cumulative GPA: every attempt counts, summer repeats included. Retaking a D doesn't erase it.
The only exception is the First-Year Grade Exclusion Policy:
- It covers a grade of D+ or below earned within the first twelve months after you first enroll at UH.
- You must repeat the course at UH within twelve months of the original grade.
- It applies once per course, to at most three courses, only one of which can be 3000-level; 4000- and 5000-level courses are excluded.
- Grades from academic honesty violations don't qualify, and past academic or financial aid decisions aren't changed.
To model a repeat outside this policy, enter both attempts as separate rows.
Dean's List
The university minimum is a 3.50 term GPA on nine or more hours, but the Colleges of Architecture, Business, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics require 12 or more hours. A single I, D, F or U that term rules you out, and S grades don't count. Some colleges add further requirements.
Latin Honors Use Only Your Last 54 Hours
UH is unusual: Latin honors are based on the GPA from your last 54 letter-graded hours at UH, not your whole record. You must complete at least 54 hours at UH.
| Honor | GPA on the last 54 hours |
|---|---|
| Cum laude (with honors) | 3.50–3.69 |
| Magna cum laude (with high honors) | 3.70–3.89 |
| Summa cum laude (with highest honors) | 3.90–4.00 |
The calculation includes every hour from the term in which the first of those 54 hours was earned. S, U, I and W grades are skipped when counting back. A rough freshman year can therefore still end in honors, while a weak senior year can cost them. Honors College students can also earn University Honors and Honors in Major.
Warning, Probation and Suspension
| Status | Trigger |
|---|---|
| Academic warning | First-time-in-college student under 2.00 in the first fall or spring term |
| Academic probation | Cumulative GPA below 2.00 (after the first long term) |
| Academic suspension | On probation and a term GPA below 2.00 |
On probation, a 2.00 term GPA keeps you on probation, and you're cleared when both your term and cumulative GPAs are 2.00 or higher. A first suspension lasts at least one long term, a second at least 12 months, and after a third you can't re-enroll. A 2.00 cumulative GPA is also required to graduate.
