UD's Quality Points
| Grade | Quality points per credit | Grade | Quality points per credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.000 | C | 2.000 |
| A- | 3.667 | C- | 1.667 |
| B+ | 3.333 | D+ | 1.333 |
| B | 3.000 | D | 1.000 |
| B- | 2.667 | D- | 0.667 |
| C+ | 2.333 | F / X / Z | 0.00 |
There's no A+. An X is a failure for academic dishonesty and a Z counts like an F. Transfer credits and quality points never enter your UD GPA.
Example: 3 credits of A- (11.001), 3 of B+ (9.999), 4 of B (12.000), 3 of C (6.000) and 3 of A (12.000) give 51.000 ÷ 16 = 3.188.
Grade Forgiveness Only Covers Your First 28 Credits
By default, both grades of a repeated course count in your GPA, and the credit counts once toward graduation. UD's grade forgiveness policy (since fall 2019) is narrow:
- It applies only to a UD course in which you got a C- or lower during the term in which you reach 28 credits attempted at UD, or earlier.
- Retake the same course later and only the higher grade counts.
- You can use it once per course and for 8 credits in total.
- A P can't replace a grade, a transfer course can't remove a UD grade, and grades from academic dishonesty findings are excluded.
Watch out: a D in a junior-year course isn't eligible, however bad it is; retaking it just adds a second grade to your average. Your first-year grades are the ones you can fix.
Pass/Fail: F's Still Count
You can take one letter-graded course per semester pass/fail, up to 24 credits over your degree (courses offered only as pass/fail don't count toward that). They usually count only as free electives and can't meet the multicultural requirement.
The instructor still assigns a letter. Any A through D- (with plus or minus) becomes P and stays out of your GPA, but an F is recorded and counts in your GPA, unlike at many schools where a failed pass/fail course is neutral.
Incompletes Turn Into F's in Two Weeks
An I must be cleared within the first two weeks of the next regular semester, or it defaults to an F unless your instructor filed an alternative grade or extension. An incomplete also doesn't satisfy prerequisites, and you can't graduate with a temporary grade on your record.
Dean's List
After fall and spring, you make the Dean's List with a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher on at least 12 credits that count toward your GPA (6 for students on an approved reduced course load). Pass/fail credits don't count toward the 12.
Latin Honors: Percentages With GPA Floors
Latin honors go to a percentage of each college's graduating class, and you must also meet a minimum overall GPA:
| Honor | Share of college's class | Minimum GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Summa cum laude | Top 1% | 3.75 |
| Magna cum laude | Next 4% | 3.5 |
| Cum laude | Next 8% | 3.25 |
The actual cutoffs are recalculated each year by college and are posted by the Registrar's Office, so they usually sit well above these floors. Separately, a Degree with Distinction in your major requires senior research, a 3.0 overall and a 3.5 in the major at the end of junior year.
Academic Warning, Suspension and Dismissal
A cumulative GPA below 2.00 puts you on Academic Warning: a registration hold until you meet an advisor, and a maximum of 14 credits in fall or spring. You stay on warning while you earn at least a 2.0 each fall and spring until your cumulative GPA reaches 2.0.
A term GPA below 2.0 while on warning brings Academic Suspension for at least one fall or spring semester, reviewed by the CURC committee each January and June. Students readmitted after suspension must earn a 2.0 every semester or face dismissal. Winter and summer sessions don't trigger suspension, but they do change your cumulative GPA.
