Grading system: UA plus/minus, A+ = 4.33 down to D- = 0.67 and F = 0. UA caps a cumulative GPA at 4.0, and IN, P, W, NA and NC are left out of the GPA.

UA's Plus/Minus Scale, Including a 4.33 A+

The University of Alabama uses full plus/minus grading. A plus adds 0.33 to a grade and a minus subtracts 0.33, so an A+ earns 4.33 and a D- earns 0.67. F and IN take no modifier.

Grade + Plain −
A4.334.003.67
B3.333.002.67
C2.332.001.67
D1.331.000.67
F—0.00—

The catch: UA caps a cumulative GPA at 4.0. An A+ can lift a single semester above 4.0, but the highest cumulative GPA an undergraduate can hold is 4.0. If the calculator shows a cumulative figure above 4.00, your official one will read 4.0.

Two GPAs: Institutional and Overall

UA keeps two GPAs, and it matters which one a rule uses:

  • Institutional GPA: only courses taken at the University of Alabama. Academic standing, the Dean's List and Latin honors all use this one.
  • Overall GPA: UA courses plus transfer work accepted for credit.

Both use the same formula: total quality points divided by total GPA hours, rounded to three decimals. If you transferred in, enter only your UA courses in the calculator to estimate the institutional GPA.

An example 15-hour semester: a 3-hour course at A+ (12.99 quality points), a 4-hour lab science at B+ (13.32), two 3-hour courses at A- (11.01 each) and a 2-hour course at B (6.00). That totals 54.33 quality points ÷ 15 hours = 3.622, enough for the Dean's List.

What Doesn't Count

Grades of IN, P, W, NA and NC are left out of the GPA. A pass/fail course that you pass has no effect, but one that you fail counts as an F.

Pass/fail is limited: sophomore standing and a 2.0 GPA are required, electives only, one course per fall, spring and summer term, and no more than four courses or 12 hours in total, whichever comes first.

Repeating a Course: Every Attempt Stays in Your GPA

At UA, the most recent attempt counts for both GPA and earned hours. Earlier attempts do not add earned hours, but they still count in the GPA calculation. A retake adds a new grade on top of the old one rather than erasing it.

For example, a 3-hour course failed (0.00) and then retaken for a B (3.00) contributes 9 quality points over 6 GPA hours, averaging 1.50 for that course. Financial aid rules also limit how often a course can be repeated, so check with Student Financial Aid before planning a third attempt.

Dean's List and President's List

  • Dean's List: a term GPA of at least 3.5 on a minimum of 12 UA credit hours in a fall, spring or summer semester.
  • President's List: Dean's List eligibility with a 4.0 term GPA, meaning all A's.

Only UA coursework counts toward the 12 hours, and pass/fail hours do not carry grade points.

Latin Honors: Fixed GPA Cutoffs

Unlike schools that honor a percentage of the class, UA sets fixed cutoffs based on the institutional GPA:

  • Cum laude: 3.5 to less than 3.7
  • Magna cum laude: 3.7 to less than 3.9
  • Summa cum laude: 3.9 or higher

You need at least 45 UA semester hours in the institutional GPA to qualify for any Latin honor, so transfer students should plan their remaining hours at UA with that in mind.

Academic Warning and Suspension: The Scholastic Progress Standard

A UA cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher keeps you in good standing. Below 2.00, what happens depends on the Scholastic Progress Standard (SPS), a minimum UA GPA that rises with your total credit hours:

Overall credit hours Classification Minimum UA GPA (SPS)
0–30Freshman1.50
31–60Sophomore1.70
61–90Junior1.90
91+Senior2.00
  • Academic warning: UA GPA below 2.00 but still at or above your SPS minimum. You must meet an adviser, but registration is not restricted.
  • One-term suspension: you were on warning and your next semester leaves you below the SPS minimum. You sit out the next fall or spring, though summer courses can count toward reinstatement.
  • Indefinite suspension: you fall below the SPS minimum again after returning, which means at least one academic year away.

Academic Second Opportunity

Students who have been away from UA for at least three academic years can petition to return with a fresh GPA. Earlier UA grades stay on the transcript but no longer count in the GPA. Courses passed with C- or better become passing hours that still meet requirements; D grades do not. The option can be used only once, cannot be undone, and requires at least 15 hours in residence afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an A+ worth 4.33 at the University of Alabama?

Yes, an A+ earns 4.33 quality points per hour, but UA caps a cumulative GPA at 4.0.

What GPA do you need for the Dean's List at Alabama?

A term GPA of at least 3.5 on 12 or more UA credit hours. A 4.0 on the same terms puts you on the President's List.

Does retaking a class replace the grade at UA?

Not completely. The latest attempt counts for GPA and earned hours, but earlier attempts still count in the GPA calculation.

What GPA is summa cum laude at Alabama?

An institutional GPA of 3.9 or higher, with at least 45 UA semester hours. Magna cum laude starts at 3.7 and cum laude at 3.5.

What happens if my UA GPA falls below 2.0?

You are placed on academic warning if you are still above the Scholastic Progress Standard for your hours (1.50 for freshmen up to 2.00 for seniors). Falling below that minimum while on warning leads to a one-term suspension.
