Grading system: Oregon State, A = 4, A- = 3.7 down to D- = 0.7 and F = 0. There is no A+; I, W, P, N, R, S, U and AUD are left out of the GPA.

Oregon State's Grade Points (AR 19)

Grade Points per credit Grade Points per credit
A4.0C2.0
A-3.7C-1.7
B+3.3D+1.3
B3.0D1.0
B-2.7D-0.7
C+2.3F0

There is no A+. Credits are quarter credits, so a typical course is 3 or 4 credits and a full load is about 15 per term. OSU truncates GPAs after two decimals rather than rounding, so a 3.498 is a 3.49.

Example term: 4 credits of A- (14.8), 4 of B+ (13.2), 3 of B (9.0) and 4 of C+ (9.2) give 46.2 ÷ 15 = 3.08.

Watch out: when you take an Incomplete, the instructor files an alternate grade. If you don't finish the work in time (normally one calendar year), that grade replaces the I and counts in your GPA.

Repeating a Course: The Second Attempt Counts

Under AR 20, as revised for 2025–26, every attempt stays on your record, but only the second attempt counts toward your GPA, credits and requirements, even if it's lower. An attempt includes S, U, P, NP and Incomplete/alternate grades.

  • Your college or department can accept a later attempt for a specific course requirement, but the GPA rule doesn't change.
  • A course first taken for a letter grade can't be repeated S/U.
  • Designated repeatable courses such as activity courses, research, seminars and selected topics are exempt; each attempt counts until the course's limit.

Retake a course only if you are confident of doing better. To model it here, enter only the second grade.

S/U Grading: Up to 36 Credits

With your advisor's or dean's approval, you can take up to 36 credits toward your bachelor's degree S/U, switching until the end of the seventh week of the term. Instructors still submit a letter grade, and the registrar converts it: C- or better becomes S, while D+ or lower becomes U with no credit. Neither counts in your GPA.

Some courses are graded only Pass/No Credit (P/N); those don't use your S/U allowance.

The Honor Roll

After each term, the registrar lists undergraduates with a term GPA of 3.50 or higher on at least 6 graded credits. Six credits is a much lower bar than the usual 12, so part-time students qualify too. S/U and P/N credits don't count toward the six.

Graduation With Academic Distinction

Distinction OSU cumulative GPA Cord
Cum laude3.50–3.69Orange
Magna cum laude3.70–3.84Gold
Summa cum laude3.85–4.00White

You need at least 90 credits at OSU or 60 upper-division (300- and 400-level) credits at OSU. The GPA covers all work attempted at OSU and is truncated, so a 3.849 misses summa.

Warning, Probation and Suspension (AR 22)

Status Trigger
Academic WarningTerm GPA below 2.0
Academic Probation24 or more OSU credits attempted and OSU cumulative GPA below 2.0
Academic SuspensionOn probation and a following term GPA below 2.0

Probation ends once your cumulative GPA reaches 2.0. Suspended students can be considered for reinstatement after two years, or after completing at least 24 quarter credits of transferable college work elsewhere with a 2.5 GPA. A 2.00 OSU cumulative GPA is also the minimum to graduate.
