Oakland's Honor Points
Oakland calls grade points honor points. Each course's honor points are the grade's value multiplied by its credits, and your GPA is the total divided by the credits attempted in courses graded A through F.
| Grade | Honor points | Grade | Honor points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A- | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C- | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ | 1.3 |
| B- | 2.7 | D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
There's no A+ and no D-. Only letter grades count, and the GPA is rounded to two decimals. Example: 4 credits of B+ (13.2), 4 of A- (14.8), 4 of C (8.0) and 4 of A (16.0) give 52.0 ÷ 16 = 3.25.
Older OU transcripts may show numeric course grades such as 3.6 instead of letters. If yours does, check the transcript key before converting anything, and use the letter scale above for current courses.
Grades That Turn Into F's
Watch out: an Incomplete (I) that is still open after one year automatically becomes an F, and a Progress (P) grade becomes an F after two years. You also can't graduate with an I on your record. Both then count fully in your GPA.
S/U Grading: 8 Credits, Electives Only
After completing 28 credits, you may switch up to 8 credits of regular courses to S/U, choosing by the end of late registration. A C or higher becomes S and a C- or lower becomes U. Neither counts in your GPA.
S/U courses count only as general electives, never for your major, minor, General Education or prerequisites. Courses the catalog designates as S/U don't use up your 8 credits.
Repeating a Course: The Latest Grade Counts
You can repeat a course to improve your grade, but only at Oakland. Most courses allow three attempts, counting the first; drops and withdrawals don't count. The repeat must use the same grading basis (letter or S/U) as the attempt that earned credit.
The most recent grade is the grade of record even if it's lower. On your transcript, excluded attempts are marked E and the included one I. A repeat taken elsewhere never enters your OU GPA. Only retake a course when you're confident of doing better; to model it, enter just the new grade.
Semester Honors, Dean's List and President's List
After each fall, winter and summer semester, you qualify with at least 12 letter-graded credits and no F, I, P or R grades:
| Honor | Semester GPA |
|---|---|
| Semester Honors | 3.00–3.49 |
| Dean's List | 3.50–3.89 |
| President's List | 3.90–4.00 |
A single F rules out all three, even with a high semester GPA. If you miss out only because of I, P or R grades, the honor is awarded retroactively once they are resolved.
Graduation Honors
| University honor | OU cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.60–3.74 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.75–3.89 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.90–4.00 |
These use only your Oakland GPA and coursework, and you need at least 30 credits at Oakland. Transfer grades don't count for or against you.
Academic Warning and Dismissal
A cumulative GPA below 2.00 puts you on academic warning for at least one semester. After that semester, a cumulative 2.00 returns you to good standing, and a semester GPA of 2.00 or higher keeps you on warning. A semester GPA under 2.00 means dismissal once you have 24 or more GPA credits, unless your cumulative GPA beats this minimum:
| GPA credits attempted | Minimum cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 24–32 | 1.61 |
| 33–48 | 1.73 |
| 49–64 | 1.85 |
| 65–80 | 1.97 |
A first dismissal means two semesters away, including summer. You can appeal within seven calendar days of notification; if it's granted, you need a 2.00 semester GPA every semester until your cumulative GPA is back to 2.00.
