Montclair State's Grade Points
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | C | 2.0 |
| A- | 3.7 | C- | 1.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 | D+ | 1.3 |
| B | 3.0 | D | 1.0 |
| B- | 2.7 | D- | 0.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 | F / XF | 0.0 |
There is no A+. An XF counts as a 0.0 like an F; it is given when you stopped attending without withdrawing and federal aid had to be returned. A WD (official withdrawal) doesn't count.
Montclair keeps every GPA to three decimal places with no rounding, for graduation, honors, the Dean's List and academic standing alike. Example: 3 credits of A- (11.1), 3 of B (9.0), 4 of B+ (13.2), 3 of C+ (6.9) and 3 of A (12.0) give 52.2 ÷ 16 = 3.262.
Watch out: an Incomplete (IN) that isn't replaced by February 15 (fall), June 30 (spring) or October 15 (summer) becomes an F and drops straight into your GPA.
Which Courses You Can Repeat
You may repeat a course only if you earned an F, D-, D, D+ or WD, and only once, for a maximum of two attempts. A C- or higher can't be repeated unless your program's approved curriculum requires it, as some teacher certification programs do.
Both grades stay on your record, credit counts once, and the highest grade becomes the official grade used in your GPA. A worse retake can't hurt you.
Repeating the course at another school is possible in rare cases, but that grade won't enter your Montclair GPA, so it can't lift an F out of your average. To model a Montclair repeat, enter only the better grade in the calculator.
Dean's List: 3.500 With No Incompletes
After each fall and spring, you make the Dean's List with a semester GPA of 3.500 or higher on at least 12 credits that count in the GPA and no IN grades. A single Incomplete keeps you off the list even with straight A's elsewhere.
Part-time students qualify by earning a 3.500 on 12 GPA credits over two consecutive semesters (summer excluded), with at least six credits in each. Credits used once can't be counted again.
Graduation Honors Start at 3.700
Many universities start cum laude at 3.5. Montclair starts at 3.700:
| Honor | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| Cum laude | 3.700–3.799 |
| Magna cum laude | 3.800–3.899 |
| Summa cum laude | 3.900–4.000 |
You need at least 51 undergraduate credits at Montclair State by the end of the semester before commencement, with letter grades (A through D-) in at least 48 of them. School of Nursing students need 32 Montclair credits. Because nothing is rounded, a 3.699 is not cum laude.
Warning, Academic Notice and Suspension
| Status | Trigger | What you must do |
|---|---|---|
| Good Standing/Warning | Cumulative GPA 2.000–2.249 | Still in good standing; advising is strongly encouraged |
| Academic Notice | Cumulative GPA below 2.0 | Raise it to 2.0 in one term, or face suspension |
| Continued Notice | Term GPA 2.0 or higher but cumulative still below 2.0 | Earn a term GPA of at least 2.25 next term |
| Academic Suspension | Standards not met | Out for a full calendar year, unless you take ADVS 198 or win an appeal |
First-time suspended students can take ADVS 198, Pathways to Success, a one-credit course taken with at least one other class (13 credits maximum). A summer or winter course that lifts your cumulative GPA to 2.0 returns you to good standing.
