Central Michigan University (CMU) GPA Calculator

Central Michigan uses honor points with one-decimal minus grades (A- = 3.7) and an E for failing. Enter your courses below for your semester and cumulative GPA, then see how CMU's last-attempt repeat rule, credit/no credit and graduation honors work.

Grading system: CMU honor points, A = 4.0 and A- = 3.7 down to D- = 0.7 and E = 0. CR, NC, I, W, X and Z are left out of hours and points.

CMU Honor Points per Semester Hour

Central Michigan calls grade points honor points. Its undergraduate scale has pluses and minuses worth three tenths, and the failing grade is an E:

Grade Honor points
A (superior)4.0
A- / B+3.7 / 3.3
B / B-3.0 / 2.7
C+ / C / C-2.3 / 2.0 / 1.7
D+ / D / D-1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7
E (failing)0.0

CR, NC, I, W, X (audit), Z (deferred) and N (no grade submitted) are not included in hours or points. An H beside a grade marks Honors Program credit, which requires a C or better.

Calculating a CMU GPA

GPA = total honor points ÷ total graded hours

Example: 3 hours of A- (11.1), 3 of B+ (9.9), 4 of A (16.0), 3 of C (6.0) and 2 of B (6.0) total 49.0 honor points over 15 hours, a 3.27.

CMU also uses the term point deficiency: the number of honor points you are short of a 2.00 cumulative GPA. With 30 graded hours and 54 honor points (a 1.80), you are 6 points short.

Repeating a Course: Only the Last Grade Counts

CMU's repeat rule is simple and applies to any grade from A to E: all attempts stay on the transcript, but only the last grade is used for cumulative hours and GPA. That includes a last grade that is lower than the first. The conditions:

  • At most 3 attempts per course. A CR, NC, I, W, Z or X counts as an attempt. Department chairs can grant exceptions, and variable-content courses are exempt.
  • You cannot repeat a course on the credit/no credit option, or repeat a letter-graded course as CR/NC.
  • A CMU course repeated at another school transfers only with a higher grade. The transfer grade brings no honor points, but your original CMU points are removed from the average.
  • Courses taken after you graduate do not change earlier grades.

For example, an E in a 3-hour course replaced by a B changes that course from 0 to 9 honor points, with no trace of the E in your GPA. Enter only the new grade in the calculator to see the effect.

Credit/No Credit

Your instructor assigns a letter, which CMU converts: C or better becomes CR, and C- or lower becomes NC. Neither affects your GPA. Up to 25 semester hours of CR/NC credit can count toward a degree, not counting courses offered only as CR/NC, with no more than two courses or 7 hours in the University Program. Once the deadline passes, you cannot switch back to a letter grade. A C- that would count as passing under letter grading becomes NC here.

Dean's List and President's List

The Dean's List requires a semester GPA of 3.5 on 12 letter-graded hours. It is published after the fall, spring and summer semesters. A 4.0 semester moves you up to the President's List. CR/NC hours don't count toward the 12.

Graduation Honors

Honor Cumulative GPA
Summa cum laude3.90–4.00
Magna cum laude3.75–3.89
Cum laude3.50–3.74

Summa and magna graduates wear medallions and cum laude graduates wear cords at commencement. Students who had their GPA recomputed need 45 residence hours, 33 of them letter-graded, completed after the recomputation.

Probation, Suspension and Dismissal

CMU reviews academic standing once a year, at the end of spring semester. Every student with a cumulative GPA below 2.00 is then placed on probation, suspension or dismissal, depending on how far below 2.00 the GPA is for the hours attempted. Probation applies when the GPA is below 2.00 but above the suspension range. Three consecutive semesters on probation, including summer sessions, make a student subject to dismissal.

Starting Over: GPA Recomputation

A student who has been away from CMU and all other colleges for four or more consecutive years, and who left with a cumulative GPA under 2.00, can petition to restart their GPA. Earlier courses stay on the record, and grades of C- or better count for credit only. You then need at least 12 more CMU hours to graduate.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I retake a class at CMU, which grade counts?

Only the last grade, whether it is higher or lower. Earlier attempts stay on the transcript but drop out of your GPA and hours.

What is an E at Central Michigan?

CMU's failing grade, worth 0.0 honor points.

What GPA is the Dean's List at CMU?

A 3.5 semester GPA on 12 letter-graded hours; a 4.0 earns the President's List.

Does a C- pass under credit/no credit at CMU?

No. Under credit/no credit, a C or better becomes CR and a C- or lower becomes NC. Neither affects your GPA.

What GPA is summa cum laude at CMU?

3.90 to 4.00. Magna cum laude is 3.75 to 3.89 and cum laude 3.50 to 3.74.
