Grading system: Baylor, A = 4.00 and A- = 3.67 down to D- = 0.67 and F = 0. Baylor truncates the GPA after two decimals; P, CR, W, I and AU are left out.

Baylor's Grade Points

Baylor's current undergraduate catalog lists a full plus/minus scale from A to D-, with no A+:

Grade Grade points
A / A-4.00 / 3.67
B+ / B / B-3.33 / 3.00 / 2.67
C+ / C / C-2.33 / 2.00 / 1.67
D+ / D / D-1.33 / 1.00 / 0.67
F0.00 (no credit)

Marks that carry no grade points and stay out of the GPA: I (incomplete), IP (incomplete extension), W (withdrawal), P and FA (pass/fail), CR and NC (credit/no credit) and AU (audit). A P or CR still earns credit.

Baylor Cuts Off Your GPA, It Doesn't Round It

After dividing grade points by GPA hours, Baylor truncates after the second decimal. A 1.99672 is recorded as 1.99, not 2.00, and that figure is used for academic standing, graduation and scholarship eligibility.

Example: 3 hours of A (12.00), 3 of B+ (9.99), 4 of A- (14.68) and 4 of B (12.00) give 48.67 grade points over 14 hours, or 3.47642…. Baylor records 3.47. The calculator above rounds to 3.48, so when you are right at a cutoff such as 3.70 for the Dean's List or 2.00 for good standing, read the third decimal and round down.

Repeats and Academic Grade Forgiveness

You may repeat a course if your highest grade in it is a C- or below. Repeating a higher grade needs a dean's approval, usually because a major requires a minimum grade. Each course allows at most three attempts, and a W counts as one.

By default every Baylor grade counts in your GPA, including earlier attempts. To remove the first grade, you request Academic Grade Forgiveness:

  • It excludes the first grade (not a W) from your GPA, for a maximum of three courses in your undergraduate career.
  • The original grade must have been C- or below.
  • On a third attempt with forgiveness, every grade except the first counts.
  • The excluded grade stays on the transcript, marked with an E, and once applied the forgiveness cannot be undone.
  • A course taken at Baylor cannot be repeated elsewhere and transferred back.

Dean's List

The Dean's List requires a semester GPA of at least 3.70, no grade lower than a C, and enrollment in at least 12 graded hours. It is announced after the fall, spring and summer terms, and only undergraduates are eligible. One C- rules you out even with a high GPA.

Latin Honors: Fixed Cutoffs

Honor Minimum GPA
Cum laude3.75
Magna cum laude3.85
Summa cum laude3.95

Only Baylor residence credit counts, and credit by examination does not. Honors printed for the ceremony use your GPA from the previous term; the final honor on the diploma and transcript is calculated after all grades are in. Because Baylor truncates, a 3.749 is a 3.74 and misses cum laude.

Academic Notice, Suspension and Dismissal

If your term GPA, cumulative GPA or both fall below 2.0, you are placed on Academic Notice for the next term. You must meet an adviser before registering and follow an Academic Improvement Plan. The required support depends on how many terms you have been on notice and your GPAs. A student with both GPAs below 2.0, for example, is enrolled in a student success course with weekly mentoring. Continued poor performance can lead to academic suspension or dismissal.

Incompletes

An I must be cleared by the end of the next semester, including summer, or it becomes an F. An extension of up to six months is possible if your instructor starts it and the department chair and dean approve.
