A student at 2.8 GPA over 60 credits wants to reach 3.0:

  • With 15 credits left: needs (3.0×75 − 2.8×60) ÷ 15 = (225 − 168) ÷ 15 = 3.80 average
  • With 45 credits left: needs (3.0×105 − 2.8×60) ÷ 45 = (315 − 168) ÷ 45 = 3.27 average

Same starting point, same target — but the version with more time left needs a far more achievable average to get there.

  • Check for a grade replacement policy. Many schools let a retaken course replace the original grade in your GPA calculation entirely — this is the single biggest lever if a bad grade is early in your record and your school offers it.
