CGPA to GPA
How a 10-point CGPA converts to the US 4.0 scale — the two-step method, the full table, and where the competing formulas disagree.
The Answer
9.5 CGPA
4.00 GPA
8.0 CGPA
2.00 GPA
Method
x 9.5
CGPA x 9.5 gives a percentage; that percentage is then matched to a US letter-grade band.
Convert a Different Value
This page answers one conversion. For any other value, the interactive GPA scale converter takes a percentage, a GPA or a CGPA and returns the other two.
Converting a single number is not the same as calculating a GPA. If you want yours worked out from real courses and credit hours, use the GPA calculator.
How the 10-Point Scale Maps onto the 4.0 Scale
The 10-point CGPA scale used across India and parts of South Asia does not map directly onto the US 4.0 scale. The conversion goes through a percentage in two steps: CGPA x 9.5 gives a percentage, and that percentage is then matched to a US letter-grade band to get grade points.
The x 9.5 multiplier comes from CBSE and is used informally far beyond it, but it is a convention rather than a standard. Other published formulas exist — subtracting 0.75 and multiplying by 10 is another common one — and they do not agree with each other. At a CGPA of 8.0, x 9.5 gives 76% while the minus-0.75 formula gives 72.5%. That gap is enough to change the letter grade.
Because two approximations are stacked, treat the resulting 4.0 GPA as orientation only. For a university application, a job abroad, or a visa file, use the conversion your issuing university publishes, or the credential evaluation service the receiving institution specifies. Those are the numbers that will actually be accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a 10-point CGPA to a 4.0 GPA?
In two steps: multiply the CGPA by 9.5 to get a percentage, then match that percentage to the US letter-grade band to read off the grade points. A 8.0 CGPA becomes 76%, which is a C at 2.00 on the standard bands.
Is CGPA x 9.5 the official formula?
It is the most widely used convention, originating with CBSE, but it is not a universal standard. Many universities publish their own formula, and those take precedence for anything official. Check your university's academic regulations before relying on the multiplier.
Why does my CGPA look so much lower as a US GPA?
Because the two scales are not calibrated the same way. A CGPA of 8.0 out of 10 sounds strong, but x 9.5 puts it at 76%, which the US bands read as a C. This mismatch is exactly why credential evaluators exist and why receiving institutions rarely accept a self-converted figure.
